The Elephant's Nest Inn

Hugh and Denise were the most welcoming hosts. The room was comfortable and warm and the evening meal and breakfast were delicious. We thoroughly enjoyed our one night stay at the Elephant’s nest.

Fabulous! Although this is no longer a public house, it is still an amazing place to stay. The rooms are well equipped, with extremely comfortable beds, ensuite bathroom, dressing gowns, fridge and tea and coffee making facilities.  The bar is fully stocked, and the fire is roaring.  The food is restaurant quality, dinner and  breakfast will not disappoint it truely is a delicious affair. As there are only three guest rooms your stay will be an intimate affair.  We have just come back from an overnight stay and we are delighted.  A beautiful 16th century building, with character and charm.  The owners wait on you hand and foot and enjoy conversation with you whilst you enjoy your delicious food.

My son and I have visited Devon every year for the last 6 years and we always stay at The Elephants Nest. The place is wonderful, charming, cozy, welcoming and such a great place to stay.
Hugh and his wife Denise are so very kind and accommodating, you could not ask for better hosts. The food is to die for, Denise could be head chef in any Michelin starred kitchen. What she serves is amazing. We eat breakfast and dinner at the Elephants Nest every day, there is no point in going anywhere else.
I even asked Denise to dump Hugh and come live with me in America, she told me no, I was too old for her!
We'll be back again next year, God willing!

Our stay was perfect. The room had everything we needed to make our stay a happy one.The breakfast was delicious and the menu varied. The surrounding countryside is incredible.Well worth a visit.

Delicious breakfast, extensive choice. Very comfortable kingsize bed. Towelling bathrobes, handmade soap for a luxury feel. Spacious rooms. Proper fresh milk in the little fridge in the room for hot drinks. Isolated spot on Dartmoor, surrounded by beautiful countryside.

Really fantastic food, it perfectly hit the "homecooked" and "restaurant grade" mark. Hugh and Denise spoilt us (and the dog!) all weekend. 

The room was very clean and well equipped. The bed was very comfy! A provided fridge was a bonus as well. The location was idyllic and felt like it was outside a Jayne Austin novel. 

10/10 would definitely stay here again.

Agreat place to stay and explore Dartmoor or go riding with Adventure Clydesdales,The food was amazing, both dinner and breakfast,witha lovely warm fire on both occasions,The bedroom was lovely and warm with a small patiio where you can watch the sun go down,the hosts where obliging and wish them all the luck in the Summer 2021.

We booked to meet friends here having stayed a few times before.  I love it.  The rooms are bright, clean and very comfortable.  The beds are amazing you just sink in them.  Tea coffee making facilities in the room and a fridge with fresh milk.  Lovely functional bathroom.  Breakfast is in the pub.  Very relaxed and delicious.

Fantastic stay, thank you

This is THE place!

We enjoyed 5 nights here which gave us easy access to the Moor. The rooms were very spacious and with lovely views. We tried the restaurant for dinner the first night and decided to eat there every night afterwards, and the breakfasts were amazing - such choice and good portions. Thank you Denise and Hugh (as well as for spoiling the dogs!)

A character property with nice views. The room was comfortable & warm. There was thick heavy dressing gowns to relax into... Perfect. Good supply of morning refreshments with fresh milk in the fridge & two bottles of water at know extra charge. The management were very hospitable & the breakfast was very substantial. This is a friendly, homely place to stay.

We spent two nights at The Elephants Nest in the ground floor room with patio.
This well known old pub is in a quiet spot and has the most beautiful garden, one of the best we have seen. Certainly attracts the birds. 
Plenty of free parking.
Dog friendly garden and public areas.
One secluded area of the gardens is for adults only, for those that want peace and a quiet drink.
The room was bright and pleasant, en suite was a reasonable size with bath and shower over.
I am a little surprised at some of the adverse comments about the accommodation by some reviewers The room was well up to the standard of usual pub accommodation, in fact it was better than many pub rooms we have stayed in. 
The bar is split up into different areas, and all really old and interesting.
Good selection of beers, including local real ales on tap.
The menu is quite extensive, although prices tend to be slightly higher than usual pub prices. That said, I did not consider it excessive, as the food was excellent and better quality than many pubs. Service by the waitresses was quick efficient and friendly. They were very busy on one night and we were astonished how quickly we received our freshly cooked meals.
Lovely home made ice cream, several flavours, expensive yes, but very nice!
Excellent choice at breakfast, and decent coffee. 
Some areas could do with a little maintenance and cleaning, and the elderly owners do tend to give the impression that they are just going through the motions, that their heart isn’t really in it anymore.
