237 reviewsI did have a panic having read the reviews 'after' booking this hotel and spoke to the Proprietor prior to staying as was really concerned the hotel would ruin the weekend. We spoke at great length and I discussed my concerns both in relation to the hotels standards and safety. The Proprietor was honest that the hotel does have some wear and tear, but he reassured my safety fears (may not meet fire standards) by stating that he would open his Health and Safety Monitoring files upto us if it was necessary. On arriving, YES the front door is not particularly welcoming but the Receptionist on the front desk was polite and helpful, which did put me at ease. The room we had was on the first floor overlooking the bus station. So if your a light-sleeper avoid. The hotel is above the OXO Bar, a decent bar with a good choice of drinks and cocktails. The Bar closes around 1.30am on weekends and I could hear the music relatively clearly when I got into bed, but it didn't stop me from sleeping. But again if your a light-sleeper avoid this room. Our room was HUGE. It was CLEAN (and yes I checked every inch of the bed after reviews), it was warm and the bed had a good solid mattress, meaning we slept well. The towels were also clean with no stains. The ensuite bathroom was also huge. Good size shower and the bathroom was clean. We even had free small bottles of bodywash and shampoo which was a bonus. We also had tea and coffee making facilities (and yes the kettle was empty and free from floating sugar wrappers, that one guest had reported!). The room was nicely decorated and yes it did have a few wear and tear issues, needed a fresh lick of paint in places and the windows could have done with a better clean but it wasn't the horrendous experience some other guests had reported. We may have just been lucky on this occasion but I am writing a review based on my initial findings. The location is fantastic. You step out onto a bustling street with bars and restaurants. It's a 5 minute walk from the Central train station and the bus station is behind the building. Oxford has an eclectic mix of people, which I found interesting and thus weekend my other half is showing me around some of his old haunts when he used to be based in Brize approximately 30 years ago! All in all I am content with my accommodation. It has everything we need and the central location was what sold it to us.
