Had a room with double bed,ensuite shower room,wardrobe,bedside cabinets,touch lights and a TV,the room was separate to other rooms as was in a extended part of the property accessed viathw rear garden (very private)very clean,warm tidy unit.
Breakfast cooked by the very friendly,approachable and accommodating  host (Duncan)who excelled I  his hospitality skills to make sure you were made comfortable and welcome.
A complete please and really did enjoy the full cooked breakfast after a night on  the town.
Parked in a well lit side street advised Duncan.

Staying 2 nights for the great north run after a 11 month pre booked air b&b cancellation a week before GNR!  Seemed to be the only option in South Shields without  stupidly over inflated prices for the GNR.  (I was worried on arriving with there still being availability 4 days before the GNR weekend. I needn’t have been! 
For a budget b&b you could not ask for more, clean and comfortable (No on-suite in my room this was made clear before booking) for the price point really not an issue. A clean and functional bathroom on the first floor. 
Duncan was just an exceptional host super friendly with all the local info I needed for the run. nothing was to much to ask great breakfast cooked by Duncan at an ungodly hour because of my run. Was  no problem and really unexpected so early in the morning. I was joined by a lovely group of fellow runners who had clearly been using althol house for many years in no short part down to Duncan thanks for looking after me Andrew 👌

Found this hotel online. I was l only going to be staying one night and so was looking for a budget hotel. What a surprise! Beautiful clean room, fabulous full English breakfast, with cereal, fruit juice and choice of tea or coffee.  Tea and coffee facilities in room and high quality toiletries in bathroom as well as soft, fluffy towels. Hotel was central and within easy walking distance to town.  20 minutes walk to the coast. 
Host Duncan was exceptional! 
Would highly recommend. Excellent value for money. 

Everything was great, a good clean, warm and comfortable room, comfy bed and great bathroom with a cracking hot power shower.. Duncan was a fantastic host and the breakfast spot on. If I'm staying in South Shields then this will be my first port of call.

Could not fault this place. The host was so welcoming and freindly, nothing was a bother for him. Room was excellent. Spotless. Bed very comfy, tea, coffe ect spot on. Fridge in room was a bonus. Bathroom spotless, shower was lovely and powerful, nice and hot. Breakfast was   amazing. Set us up for the day. Will defo be going back.

The establishment is a 5 minute walk to Shields where you can catch the local metro if need be.

Duncan was just an exceptional host . His beautiful B&B was spotless. 
We came for my daughter’s wedding. The whole place made us feel like we were in our own home. Nothing was too much for him. Clean and spacious room. Duncan went above and beyond. 

Excellent stay, comfy rooms and a great host. Lovely filling breakfast, set us up for the day. Thoroughly recommend to anyone looking for a central South Shields location and a 10 min stroll to the beach. 

An absolutely gorgeous B&B, spotlessly clean, and a very comfortable bed.
The host Duncan was brilliant, friendly and happy to help from the moment we got there.
I would highly recommend and will definitely return.

Athol House is located right next to a main road in England.

The beds are really comfy and the room is really secure and you will feel safe staying overnight in this B-and-B. 

The room I stayed in included 2 single beds, 1 double bed, a kettle, a microwave, 2 sinks, fridge/freezer, a desk, a bin, a chair, and a TV (with no DVD player) and a basket including everything you need to make a nice tea/coffee in the morning (but no cups).

There are quite a few choices for breakfast, from cornflakes to full english breakfast, this has all of the choices.

Athol House has free wifi and you can park for free in the nearby streets, but unfortunately not directly outside. There is also a bus stop really close, but again, not directly outside.

The host, Duncan, has a six-pack, long-flowing hair and is really, really kind. He will be the nicest man you see all day.

Although from the outside it looks poor, ugly and bad, but honestly you won't regret going.

I stayed with my mum and brother for 1 night, and it costed 30 pounds each, but it were worth it.

IF YOU DON'T STAY AT ATHOL HOUSE YOU WILL REGRET IT FOR THE REST OF YOUR LIFE.

Everything you need to know about Athol House (2023) *PLEASE READ*

After a terrible day on our bikes ,i had a broken chain and my friend got a puncture .we went to Halfords they refused to fix the puncture because it was a electric bike i phoned Athol house & Duncan told us how to get there & was waiting outside for us he made us very welcome and helped us in with our bikes. We found the bedroom and bathroom very clean and comfortable We  had  a good breakfast then after breakfast Duncan took the wheel to a bike shop to get the puncture fixed he  could not enough for us ,we would recommend Athol house to any one THANKS AGAIN DUNCAN

Very helpfull host

This is the 3rd time I've stayed here, and have to say Duncan is an amazing host. He goes above and beyond to make sure your stay is perfect. Nothing is too much bother. Rooms are very clean and well maintained. Beds are so comfy, lovely shower. Great location too.  Will definitely be back. The towel swans need a little bit more practice though 😉

Wouldn't stay anywhere else

We’re visiting from Australia and were  in Sheilds for 4 nights at Athol House. Not only was it a comfy and clean place to stay with the children but the staff were very friendly, helpful and thoughtful... and we had a good laugh. Thank you Duncan, you made our stay happy and memorable and the kids loved seeing you at breakfast time. Not only can Duncan cook but he’s a hunk of a man with a six pack and long flowing hair and how he stays so tanned in the winter is amazing... but seriously Thanks again.
