The George Hotel

We had the Christmas dinner menu at the George with friends.  The staff were very friendly and the food was excellent.  Warm log fire created a nice ambience for the evening.
Would highly recommend the George.

Visited on Sunday and had all the parts of a great British pub. 
We’ll priced drink’s, friendly staff, live music and a meat raffle. Free bar snacks. 
If you’re in the area on a Sunday and want the best of a pub experience I’d recommend here. 
And from next week their kitchen opens for Sunday Carvery’s. I’ll be heading back to try that.

Stopped for evening meal. Food was excellent . First occasion I had a steak pie and mash . This time I had beef stew with chips followed by apple pie . I have used this location twice now and food is consistently good. Otter beer served at the bar was good for real ale fans. Staff make you feel welcome..

Stayed for a family gathering, decent size rooms,clean and comfortable, very friendly and helpful landlady, bathroom down the corridor but with the age of the building and the room price that was not a problem. Good breakfast too.

Very friendly lovely host, we felt very welcome indeed and our room very cosy too. We were looking for a base, so we could explore in the local area, and the george was perfect for this. Comfy beds, clean room and ensuite, lots of character. We will definitely visit again.

We came in hoping for food, was desperate, blisteringly hot, headache etc. They weren't serving food but offered to let us use the dining room with food bought from the take away. Even gave us plates and cutlery! Lovely dining area to ourselves.

Very generous food portions, all cooked fresh whilst you wait. Went here with family for lunch. Was very surprised at service received for such small pub. 

Have lots of different events going on in pub, which anyone would be welcome to go to,

Booked Sunday lunch. We were shown to our table, then nothing happened for a while so we went to find out if we had to get drinks from the bar. Waitress took order and drinks came. Restaurant nicely decorated and very clean. Carvery, generous helpings of freshly roasted meat, lovely crisp roast potatoes, good selection of veg. All very nicely cooked. We finished and sat and waited, other people’s plates had been taken and they’d been offered puddings! We waited and waited I the end my husband went and asked if we could have puddings. Manager said she’d send waitress over. Waitress came took order for desserts about 5 minutes later she came back plonked the desserts and a small jug of custard on the table and walked off! I had to go and ask for spoons to eat the dessert with! I really felt we were invisible!  It wasn’t a cheap lunch £52 for the two of us but was sadly spoilt by lack of service by the waitresses. If they put as much effort into their job as they did into their dress and make up, they’d be a credit to the restaurant. Maybe our faces didn’t fit! 
Harsh but true I’m afraid.

Popped in casually on a Sunday whilst cycling.
Excellent carvery ; generous portions. Well cooked meat and vegetables; excellent crackling. Good value  . 
Attentive friendly staff. Fair range of beers. Very pleasant pint of Green King Abbot Ale. 
Worth visiting.

The landlady if really charming and very helpful. The George is a very old inn with basic facilities. Walking down a dark passage in the middle of the night to go to the toilet is a bit old fashioned. No evening meal or breakfast was available. Lydd on a Sunday is a bit of a challenge to find somewhere to eat! 

Overall we enjoyed our short stay. Great value for money and a very charming hostess.

Great Sunday Afternoon

Evening meal at The George 

Lovely Lydd

I stayed here overnight after attending an event in Lydd and not wanting to drive back to London that evening.  The room at the George was pre-booked and I was able to book the only room in the hotel that has ensuite facilities.  The other rooms have to use the shower and toilet in the hallway,  The room was just fine and although the shower is tight, I had a comfortable night.  Just remember that this is a working pub, so if you book a room on a weekend you might be bothered by entertainment downstairs.

Lydd is pretty bleak nowadays and if you are looking for breakfast you will probably have to do what I did and drive into New Romney 3 miles away.

I checked out early before the pub was open, my bill was on the desk downstairs and I left the keys and cash for the room with the bill - that probably would only work in Lydd :-)
