Our second stay at this wonderful hotel in the beautiful Borrowdale countryside.  The furnishing is warm and the welcome from hosts Gary and Donna even warmer.  The food is superb and the wine list sumptuous at affordable prices.  We will visit again in 2025.

Just returned from a week as a guest at Hazel Bank Country House, my third visit there in over 30 years. This is as perfect a vacation as anyone could ask for. The current owners, Donna and Gary have only improved the experience since I first visited over 30 years ago. Donna has done a remarkable job with the food, which is as refined and delicious as that of any three-star restaurant. Gary is very informed and helpful with wine selections. Wine list is expert.

The location is somewhat remote, a three-hour drive or train trip from London, but it is so worth it. Local bus service is very good, with a stop right at the inn gate. You really don’t need a car. The journey is part of the gift, as the scenery en route is glorious.

If I could take only one more vacation in this life, I would choose Hazel Bank Country House in the Borrowdale Valley. You will sleep like a lamb, enjoy delicious food every night, and walk in the most beautiful landscape on the planet, right outside your door. It is like being a guest in a country house atmosphere. I cannot wait to return.

The 1970s song “The long and winding road that leads to your door “could have been written about our first of many visits to Hazel Bank .The tranquil striking scenery from Keswick to  the magical Rosthwaite is just the start of another memorable trip to this hotel .
Donna and the avuncular Gary have offered comfort and consistently high standards of hospitality throughout each of our stays and their many repeat bookings are testament to their professionalism.
The area also offers so much to so many varieties of people, of course those who want to walk or climb but also the town of Keswick has in our experience the greatest plentiful supply of blue badge spaces to suit people with mobility issues.A pleasant surprise in this famously outdoor paradise.

I’ve lost count of how many times we have stayed at Hazel Bank Country House, but I know we like to stay at least three times a year. It’s the hotel we most look forward to returning to, we just wouldn’t stay anywhere else in the lakes now. To us it’s located in the most beautiful part of the Lakes, the views from the hotel are just amazing. It’s my husband’s favourite place to dine the food is superb . We particularly like Morgan and Jack who have worked at Hazel Bank a while now, just an absolute delight both of them. Look forward to returning soon.

From the moment you arrive at Hazel Bank you receive a warm welcome from Gary. It quickly becomes evident that the property is maintained throughout to a very high standard. The bedroom is very comfortable and well appointed whilst the bathroom is quite luxurious.
Guests are invited to gather in the lounge for drinks and canapés at 7pm ahead of the evening meal. What a delight then awaits. Our two evenings saw fish and chateaubriand served as the main courses and both were outstanding. The flavours and tastes which emanated from each course during those two evenings were simply exquisite, and when enhanced by the attentive service, reflect enormous credit on everyone associated with Hazel Bank and we could not recommend it highly enough.

A  splendid three day break at Hazel Bank. Every thing about the hotel is top notch. The welcome, the decor, the food and the service are all well considered and of the highest quality. I could go on and on about everything but will use one word instead - OUTSTANDING!

Excellent two-night stay in scenic Borrowdale. From the moment you hit the driveway through the beautiful grounds you get the feeling that all the details have been looked into and refined. This feeling is continued into the tastefully decorated and furnished property, through meeting the owners and the delightful staff (only “don’t tell them that as they will want a pay rise”). We particularly enjoyed meeting the other guests over pre- dinner canapés. The dinners were excellent, supported by a thoughtful and well-priced wine list. Loved watching the woodpeckers and red squirrel through the dining room window.

We stayed here for 4 nights in May and it was one of the most relaxing and beautiful holiday we have ever had. Gerry and Donna are very hospitable and gave us good tips for nice walks. We appreciated a lot that one can start some walks simply from the house without using the car. The location is quiet, the garden lovely, the personnel (two more girls in the restaurant) friendly and attentive. One of the highlights here is absolutely the 3-course dinner - delicious, high quality and creative. We didn't plan to but ended up eating here all evenings. Every meal was a true delight. We also enjoyed the casual chatting with the hosts (Gerry is a man with excellent humour), the personnels and other guests. The hotel is a hidden jewel in this less touristic and thus even more beautiful part of the lake district! We'll be back :).

The hotel is a wonderful  experience , with a very good team. We appreciate the thought and care they all put into the business. We also enjoyed the company of our fellow guests. We hope to return one day.

The local walks and general environment are quite endearing. There are beautiful  birds, red squirrels and the odd sheep as outdoor visitors. 

The Cumbrian sense of humour and hospitality is also memorable.

Warm and  thoughtful hospitality

I would endorse all the previous comments about Gary and Donna’s wonderful hospitality at this small, peaceful and beautiful hotel. Our downstairs room, Castle Crag, was beautifully furnished and immaculate, with a very comfortable bed. We had views over the fells from two windows, and yes, we spotted a red squirrel.
Food was delicious and was preceded by drinks and canapés in the lounge. When we were there, we were virtually the only non repeat guests which is telling. There was a a country house party atmosphere and much banter which we really enjoyed.

Luxurious gem of a place set in stunning scenery

Our judgement of any hotel is based predominantly on the fact that we should feel better when we leave than when we arrived .On that basis we felt better in less than 24 hours on this occasion. 
The welcome from Gary was warm and helpful and after a more stop than start journey through the South Lakes the welcoming tea and biscuits in the lounge was immensely refreshing.
Dinner in the evening started with a flavourful favourite ham hock terrine and after melt in the mouth beef ended with a “master class” version of chocolate fondant.
Gary and Donna form a formidable team and thoroughly deserve their success.

Excellence comes as standard

After  overcoming the flood across the valley it was great to arrive out our first class destination. Superb setting  and quality  within the house. Made to feel at home from the moment we arrived by Gary and his wife even to drying out my wet  clothes,. The ambience in the rooms were first class. Food delicious , not a complaint   but we should have asked for the lamb to be   cooked a little longer  .Background  music  whilst dining so relaxing. Views from our front bedroom outstanding .Think  maybe an updated tv  could be due .
