The Dublin Packet

Located close to the railway station and ferry port, the old Dublin Packet pub has been recently refurbished and offers budget b+b accommodation. I needed somewhere cheap to stay overnight as the last train out that I could have used left before the ferry arrived from Dublin. I booked a single room on line. There is a separate entrance to the accommodation above the pub; there are four rooms (I think) and two shower rooms. The stairs are quite steep and narrow and not really suitable for the less mobile. My single room (2) was very small and has no window so it was somewhat stuffy but the landlady assures me this is being addressed. It was nicely decorated, the bed comfy, and coffee making facilities and TV were included. The double room next door looked a lot more comfortable. Breakfast was huge and good quality. The bar area is comfortably furnished in a contemporary style. There is a restaurant but food is not available on Saturday evenings so I cannot comment on the quality. Be aware that Holyhead is very noisy though! Virgin Trains seem to think they need to leave their Voyagers' engines running continuously at night whether or not they are about to depart and this was quite irritating, and on a Saturday night at least most of the pubs in town have loud music blaring out till late, including the Holland Inn next door which at least offers real ale as some compensation - it's otherwise hard to find in the town. Overall I got pretty much what I expected at a reasonable price.
