All I can say is very cheap for a reason ..
Single room booked, but given a 3 bedroom. 
Towel, bedding & pillows clean, but mattresses on 2 of the beds very badly stained (possibly urine)
the other very tired and sagging in the middle.
All in a the place is very tired...

Diffinately  not a 4 in a bed winner

At 1st glimpse it is like stepping back in time. The landlady has described it exactly as it is. A no frill pub which must be remembered it’s a pub not a hotel. It is very basic and there is room for improvement but it will be a pity to destroy the feel of the place. 
When we arrived we were greeted by the landlady who was very polite. She showed us to our room and said if there was anything we needed to give her a shout. 
We could not get over that their kitchen never closes. We had to walk through the kitchen to get to our room and the kitchen was clean and tidy. 
It is a shared bathroom and again is old as is the pub. 
There is live music most nights do it is worth checking if you want a quiet night. 
The regulars made us feel very welcome, chatting away. There was also some people practising folk music who invited us in to join them. It was lovely. 
Nothing is too much trouble for this couple who run this pub. Asked for a fan and she gave me hers out of her  office. 
The landlord is 83 years old and cooked our dinner and breakfast. They both work very hard.
If your are looking for a modern stay then choose a hotel but if you are not fussy and looking for tradition and history then stay here. 
I think it how you approach things that can make things good or bad

Friendly pub

So I stayed for 2 night with my husband you get what you pay for  it was very clean the owner and other staff were all very nice and polite I didn't find any faults and will return next time we are down visiting friends. I can't tell you what the food is like as we didn't eat in. But I can tell you the drinks are of a reasonable price no more then what you would pay in other places.

Great value

I booked the single room for a 2 day work trip and would 100% use again. Exactly as described, small room with enough space for a single person, decent shared bathroom round the corner, ample parking and 15 minute drive from the cricket ground. It was electro night in the bar while I was there and while it was audible in the room it didn't bother me and it is clearly advertised that you are staying in a noisy pub so I expected no different. The building is old with all the creaks and bangs you'd expect and I had no issues with the other clientele. I didn't go into the bar but any staff I encountered were lovely and polite and the room was attended by housekeeping while I was out. Really don't understand the negative reviews below, and would politely suggest some of them are due to the guest not fully understanding what they were booking. I found it exactly as described and would definitely use again, thanks for the stay!

Decent and cheap for work trip

I was booked in here for work from my company.
When I got in the room I couldn't believe how small it was,like a broom cupboard. 
Cold in room electric plug in heater 
Shared bathroom and toilet with at least 2 other rooms who had possibly 2 or more people in them 
It felt dirty and looked dirty
I could go on but won't I only stayed the one night and stayed somewhere else the second night.
Booked into travelodge which was only a few pounds more.

Sub standard

Just spend the extra, £££  and find some where else.

I didn't have any food there so can not comment on that.

People were leaving the front door open so all the cold air was coming in along with the road noise.
As other residents were going up and down the stairs it sounded like a herd of elephants!

If you want a very cheap, no thrills  place to stay,then this is it.

Would I stay here again, no.

Don't bother

Dreadful place!! Dirty, damp, mouldy and owners rude! Very little parking for guests using the b&b, owner seemed more concerned about his pub customers! After booking and contacting them to state we would be arriving quite late and to ensure there was disabled access for my daughter’s wheelchair, I was disgusted to find that the 2 rooms we’d booked had been booked out before we got there and we’d been out in the “family” room. 5 single beds for 3 adults and 3 children. The disabled access for my daughter meant walking through the kitchen (no access or space for her wheelchair) the kitchen itself was dirty, we knew right there that we wouldn’t be staying and paying extra for breakfast in the morning! We couldn’t lock our door from the inside meaning that the children were able to open the door. Room was damp, mouldy and cold. Surfaces were sticky. Carpet was dirty and full of cigarette burns and god knows what else. Workmen were smoking drugs in the car park,When I spoke to the owner to discuss this And the state of the room he responded saying we got a good deal so what did we expect and slammed a door in my face. The workmen that has been smoking in the car park were in the room opposite us and so the landing absolutely stunk of drugs all night. The shared bathroom was vile. Mouldy, grubby and someone’s dirty underwear in there. We didn’t use the facilities in the morning, we got up and left early to find somewhere else for a wash and breakfast! Wouldn’t recommend to anyone!!
The owner does not take responsibility for anything and always blames customers you only have to read other reviews to see this, he makes me out to be lying

We booked (and paid for!) 2 rooms as 3 adults and 3 children (asked for disabled access due to 1 child being in a wheelchair). Got there to find the owner had booked all rooms out, except the family room...through the kitchen (this was the start for me, wasnt very clean at all, so I knew I wouldn't eat here!) and up the stairs we go..welcome to the family room..3 single beds in one bit the through a hobbit sized door to a hobbit sized attic style room with 2 single beds. I ended up sharing with one of my children as there weren't enough beds! Lads in the carpark smoking drugs..they then stayed in the room opposite and the whole landing smelt of drugs! Shared bathroom..wow..grubby is an understatement, a toilet that didnt flush, mould everywhere, 10inches in dust and someone's dirty underwear by the sink...bedroom felt damp, had an electric heater to try and warm us up. The chest of drawers, tv remote, kettle was sticky..didnt attempt to make a cuppa! When my friend approached the owner about the fact we'd paid for 2 rooms n now had one with not enough beds, and the fact that customers were smoking drugs on his property he stated.."what do you expect you had the rooms at a discount" (by this he means black friday sale) and then slammed the door in her face. We tried for a while to change hotels, but unfortunately after spending the money on these rooms with no chance of getting it back and most other places being fully booked we had no choice but to stay..left early in the morning, and due to the bathroom being in use, went to nearest place we could to clean our teeth wash and get breakfast!

Disgusting!!

If your thinking of staying at the lion brewery please be very cautious! The rooms are very dirty and dated! Rodent droppings visible around skirting in public bar and strong smell of urine in rooms even tho you have to share a bathroom with other rooms. Bedding absolutely filthy and stained!! Topped off by very creepy owner who thought it was ok to enter our room late one night whilst we was sleeping. Most uncomfortable experience I have ever stayed. I don’t normally write a bad review but I absolutely felt this was necessary to warn others. It’s a thumbs down from me! Please be aware if you have young children. This place needs knocking down and redeveloping. I wouldn’t stay here for free. Be aware owners become very aggressive and argumentative when i tried to point out some of the issues. Left after first night with no refund. 

BE VERY CAUTIOUS!!

We were visiting the area for a family wedding and needed somewhere inexpensive to stay for one night.  The booking-in hours are generously long, so we were able to check in just before the wedding's evening reception.  We were warmly greeted by the barmaid, who offered us towels and then showed us to our rooms.  

Most of the rooms are multi-bedded and each of ours was clean and comfortable with facilities for making hot drinks.  They're no-frills rooms and for the price they're excellent.    

We ordered breakfast at about midnight when we returned from the wedding reception and the owner of the pub, Mike was bright and cheery when we came down for the freshly prepared breakfast in the morning - good honest 'full English'.  Mike is a lovely man and chatted to us during breakfast.

The website gives an accurate indication of what to expect when staying at The Lion,   and I'd certainly stay there again if I were in the area.
