Called in on Saturday night on the way into York. Greeted by wonderful friendly girl at the bar. Found us a table straight away. Hubby had the burger which he said was delicious and I had a rather nice chicken and ham pie. Definitely homemade. Couldn’t fault a thing. We even had a drink with one of the locals in there. 
You just can’t beat a good country pub.

My family of 5 stayed for 3 nights while visiting York.  The owner was very friendly, helpful, and knowledgeable about the area.  The location was perfect for exploring York.  The room was spacious and comfortable, and the breakfast was excellent.  Would definitely recommend.

We booked the Blacksmith Arms as a base for a weekend visit to Flamingo Land. We booked through Expedia which turned into a saga, however when we contacted them direct they did everything they could to resolve the problem, morale is book direct. The family room was spacious and clean with a large bathroom. Lovely little village pub with Theakston Best on tap. We ate in the pub on Saturday evening and originally thought it was a little over priced however the pizza I had was first rate. Breakfast was continental but was nice and plentiful. If a full English was served five stars would have been given. Nice place and friendly people, would definitely return but book direct

Old pub turned in to a b&b that is either being slowly renovated or is slowly deteriorating - it’s difficult to tell to be honest and I didn’t want to offend the owner by asking what one it was.
Nice sized bedrooms with large comfy beds and with a pleasant feel to the rooms. En-suites are fine if a bit variable - one definitely not suited for anyone over 6’ so do check first, and shower in the room we had wasn’t great but I’ve found much worse in b&b’s (plus the bin in there hadn’t been emptied after the last guests).
The old lounge bar is still retained and is used for breakfast. It was one of the main reasons I booked here and it could be wonderful with a bit of tlc as it also operates as an honesty bar in the evening for guests. Sadly we didn’t make real use of it because the interesting looking draught beer hand pump wasn’t actually connected to any beer, and although there was a good choice of spirits there wasn’t the mixers to go with them. Breakfast itself was very good, plenty of choice and all the hot food was well cooked (poached eggs on first morning were spot on).
Worth noting for anyone frightened of or allergic to dogs - there are dogs loose in the yard where the entrance is (the entrance is to the right through metal gates not the old pub entrance). They bark and the large black one does look threatening. It isn’t, they are gentle and friendly, but having apparently been attacked by a large dog in the past an elderly fellow guest was genuinely frightened of dogs and was unprepared for them being at the gates, so I thought it worth mentioning incase somebody else had the same fears as her.
