Everything you could ever want in a pub. The food is bang on and properly home-cooked. The menu is very extensive annd offers hearty English food all the way through to interesting vegetarian/vegan options. There’s decent ale on tap and premium lager. My wife was particularly impressed with the Sauvignon Blanc. The service is warm, friendly and attentive. It’s a lovely place to be, eat and drink. Shame the weather wasn’t 30 degrees and sunny so we could enjoy the lovely garden out back!

Perfect after a walk around Calke or local countryside.

Exactly what I needed to recharge and relax. Delicious food (and swift service!), very comfy bed for a sound night's sleep, and the staff could not have been more helpful. I was really well looked after, and as a woman staying alone, I felt safe, and that nothing was too much trouble. I was addressed by name at mealtimes - I wasn't just a room number. Recommended!

The personal touch

Excellent stay at this great little country pub. Lovely comfy room, good restaurant and breakfast and always a warm welcome from the owners.  The location is ideal for south Derby and the surrounding area and the M1 is only 20 mins away. It's become my preferred bolt hole for business trips in the area.

Fantastic host John and Jayne.fantastic room. Food amazing. Nothing was too much for host and staff. Lots of history on the Staff Of Life. Visited the church where one of the original owners laid to rest. Easy to get to derby and Melbourne.. lovely outside area.what a place to stay best pub and B&B in Derbyshire.well worth the award

We were welcomed nicely, no problem there at all. The breakfast was good. The room unfortunately wasn't as good. The  bathroom needs refurbishment,  the grout between the tiles is black, the shower head is very unclean abd there is a smell of drains in the bathroom. Disappointed!

Disappointed 

We stayed here for 2 nights in July. Communication prior to our visit was good and we were given the room I had asked for. Welcome was very friendly and the room was modern, clean and with a well equipped bathroom. 
Breakfast in the morning was from a limited menu choice, but I enjoyed the novelty of a cooked breakfast and my wife had cereals and a toasted teacake. Service was prompt and friendly.
We also ate in the restaurant/bar each evening. The menu is unpretentious, but we both found the gammon steak very tasty and enjoyed the liver and bacon and also the trio of sausages. Service was good and fairly quick and prices definitely acceptable.
There was a good range of drinks at reasonable prices and the atmosphere in the restaurant/bar was pleasant with quite a good number of other diners on both evenings.

Small friendly village pub/restaurant

Our walking group had lunch at the Staff of Life Ticknall. The menu was varied and included light bites which suited some of our elderly members. We opted to sit outside in the pleasant garden area and the staff quickly took our drinks and meal orders. The food was soon on the tables. The portions were generous, well cooked and moderately priced. All in all an excellent experience and one that we hope to repeat in the near future.

A great lunch on a pleasant location

I booked a number of rooms here for a business trip back in May 2022. Upon arrival, I informed the friendly staff at check-in that one colleague wouldn't be coming but I was happy to pay for the room since it was last minute. I also advised that one of our party won't be arriving until a little later. All fine and all checked in. Or so I thought...

Hours later I get a knock at my door from another staff member, saying the Manager wants to see me... Very ominous...

I oblige, and head to the main building where I am met by a very sarcastic and rude woman who is demanding to know when the other guests are checking in. I advise only one room is going to be occupied later. She is furious and angrily asks which one. I start laughing as the situation is absurd and explain that only she could know that, since she allocates the rooms and indeed holds the keys...

She begins a very loud tirade about fire safety and needing to know which room is going to be occupied. She accuses me of lying at check in and not informing her team that one room will be vacant. Guests at dinner are watching... It's all rather excruciating and yet somehow I'm loving the madness of this total "nonversation".

I suggest that she could choose the room she'd like my colleague to occupy and that this would, rather obviously, resolve her dismay. She hands me a key. The situation is resolved. I'm baffled. She's still angry.

We go out separate ways, both safe in the knowledge I will never return to this mad house.

Baffling Manager ruins what could have been a lovely stay

Most unwelcoming atmosphere on arrival and staff were unwilling to accommodate a table of 5.  There were 2 tables of 4 available but staff were adamant that another chair could not be added. It's such a shame that after many months of Covid closures we were not made to feel welcome. 
We decided not to bother and left.

Family meal out

Highly recommended and rated. 
Accommodations were excellent as was the  breakfast
A very warm and welcoming Couple, who went above and beyond in assisting us with all our needs.
