I have been travelling in Turkey for over a month. Here I met the rudest Turks of them all. They are  grotesquely unwelcoming to foreign (?) tourists. The roof terrace is windy, the music is roaring and you are invited to sit right next to the speakers, although many other places are unoccupied. Just stay away.

I emailed the guest house a few days before getting there but never got an answer.

So the day before I got there I asked a Turkish speaker from my hotel in Cappadocia to call them for two reasons.  First to tell them that I was going to arriving at 5am and to make sure that someone would be there to open the door so that I would not be stuck out in the street alone and vulnerable.  

No problem they said.

My Turkish contact also asked if there was someone there who spoke English.  Important b/c my main goal in going to Urfa was to tour Gobekle Tepe temple well outside of town.

No problem they said.

I got there at 5am just like I told them.  Door was closed and locked.  

I knocked and knocked.  

No answer.  

I started to kick the door.  

No answer. 

Then I stood on one foot so that I could pound the door with both fists and kick with one foot.

No answer.

I kept at it.

No answer.

Then I realized that I might just be ringing the dinner bell for some mugger to rob me.  

Then I remembered that I had a cell phone.  So I started ringing and kicking the door again.  I heard the phone ring on the other side of the door.  Obviously no one was there at the phone.  I was getting really worried about the security situation.

I let it ring for a long time.

Eventually someone came and opened the door.  He was surprised to see me and a little miffed to have been awoken so early.  He spoke no English but managed to convey the idea that the person who did speak English would be there later in the morning.  

I was just happy to be inside and not vulnerable.

The room was nice size and very high ceiling.  Lots of wood.

It was cold but for some reason my bed had two half sheets not one sheet that could cover the whole bed.  So the half sheet would get thrown off as I tossed back and forth during sleep and would wake up cold.  The space heaters on the wall only worked for 30 seconds when I turned them on.  

The bathroom had black hair on the wall and a bar of used soap.  In one of the wooden boxes there were a bunch of cigarette butts.  The shower leaked water on to the room's carpet.  

I asked about the sheets and they just didnt see anything wrong with the half sheets.

The guy who was supposed to speak English was a Syrian refugee who could hardly speak English at all and even when I was able to make myself understood, he spoke no Turkish in order to get the answers from the local Turks who ran the place.  He himself knew nothing.  

On the first night, they had a band playing music in a room just below mine.  So I could not get to sleep until past 1am despite being very tired from the previous night's lack of sleep.

At the end when I was checking out, I tried to pay with a credit card b/c I was low on cash.  They refused.  I had to leave and was forced to part some what little cash I had.  They laughed at me then, as if to say, "the American had the cash all the time.".  I was so furious I could have spit at them as they laughed and waved.

I went to another hotel where the service was great and met another guest who had had a similar experience at Ur Edessa.

This was my only bad experience in three weeks spent in Turkey.  Most all Turks were very hospitable, kind and polite.
