Dogan Royal Hotel

I foolishly did not have hotel reservations and got in late to Ankara one Friday evening in October 2017. The first two hotels I found were completely booked so I was very glad that the Dogan Royal had a room for me. It was pretty good - clean and comfortable bed, adequate water pressure in the shower, a competent breakfast buffet in the basement, and off-street parking that they took care of. The wifi signal could have been stronger, and not many of the staff spoke English very well - a problem for me as I don't know any Turkish. This led to a strange cultural encounter as I was checking out. At every hotel I've ever stayed at, you can leave your mail at the front desk and they'll post it for you (I had most recently done this at my hotel in Istanbul). I had written a postcard to my family, complete with their address (including "ABD," the Turkish abbreviation for "USA") and adequate postage, and presented it to the woman on duty. She had no idea what to do with it. Whatever Google Translate rendered as "would you please mail this card for me" was obviously lacking, as she proceeded to scan it into her computer! I did manage to leave the card in her care but I doubt that it will ever arrive.
