VuPoint Guest House

Vupoint Guest House is located on a hill in the Bethel neighborhood, so it has an excellent view of the Buccoo Reef. It is about a 20 minute walk to the nearest beach (Grange) which is very bear bones (no lifeguard, no bar), but has great shade trees and beautiful clear blue water. The rooms at the guest house are very spacious with enormously high ceilings. We had a room with a private bath and the shower had strong water pressure and an almost spa feel due to its size.

The kitchen is also large with access to enough flatware to feed a small army (lol). The refrigerator is also large and there is access to a stove as well. The porch adjacent to the kitchen is huge, with a beautiful view, perfect for sipping tea in the morning or a cold Stag in the evening.

Because this is a guest house, rooms are not cleaned during your stay (I didn't know about this so I thought it important to mention). And although the website says that continental breakfast is provided, it is really do-it-yourself, with a loaf of bread, butter and jam (I left my strawberry jam so maybe you can have some!), tea bags and instant coffee. However, the kitchen is well equipped enough for you to make your own meals (although why would you when the food in Tobago is so delicious. By the way, you must have Benji's Bake n Shark located by the harbor in Buccoo).

Vupoint is located in a great neighborhood where, if you are friendly like we are, you can meet people and get acquainted with the local culture. We were there at Easter so there was a big street party called Harvest. People graciously invited us to their homes for delicious food and we danced and limed until the early morning to dancehall, soca and reggae. Harvest happens often on Sundays in this neighborhood, so maybe you can catch it! 
 
Molly is a great host and was quick to help us buy groceries and give us pointers on places to visit. She provided us with an extra fan, as well as beach towels. 

If you want a resort with a beach at your doorstep, fresh towels each day and a full buffet at each meal, this is not the place. However, if you like being off the beaten path and want to feel closer to local culture, while being in a safe, clean, spacious space with a great view, then by all means, choose Vupoint!

The guesthouse is located in a village, near a corner where loud music is played almost all the time.  On Friday it blasted all day and late into the night.  Other nights were quieter.  In the morning the roosters start crowing before 5:00 am.  They keep going for at least an hour.  The homeless dogs join them and oftentimes they bark at night too.  There is also a parrot which makes a rocket during the day. A little later in the morning the chickens start clacking and then only the occasional rooster chimes in. 
The guesthouse does not provide such basics as soap or shampoo, let alone a hair dryer.  There are many dishes in the kitchen but there is no detergent.  When we bought our shampoo, we used it for washing dishes too.  Luckily, towels are provided.  There is a TV in the room and in the dining room too, but it doesn't work.  It looks like it hasn't worked in a long time. 
The lady who runs the place, Molly, tries to be helpful (she even lent me a beach towel) but she creates a feeling of skimpiness: she emphasizes over and over that the air conditioning should be turned off when we're out and the door to the bathroom should be closed when it's on.  Also, the breakfast she provides consists of packaged white bread, marmalade, "I can't believe it's not butter", Lipton tea bags and instant coffee.  There is a drip coffee maker, but no drip coffee.  There is no salt and pepper either.  It would have made such a big difference for a small cost to the owner if basic things that travelers don't carry around would be provided. 
What is nice in the guesthouse is the full kitchen with a lot of dishes and utensils and a large refrigerator.  In the room there is a large armoir with a lot of drawers (but only 3 hangers).  The bathroom is large and has a lot of counter space.  It's within a 5 minute drive to a small local beach but about 25 minutes away from the beautiful beach at Pigeon Point.  
Luckily, on an evening walk I stumbled upon a gathering people singing religious hymns to the sound of a steelpan.  It turned out to be a wake and my husband and I enjoyed the singing very much.  This made up for the poor choice of a guesthouse.

If you're looking for peace and quite, stay away

We visited VuPoint Guesthouse over christmas and newyears. It was perfect for us, not in the most tourist-packed parts, but close enough to a lot of things! Molly and Cloyd that we got to know at our stay were great, they showed and told loads of fun and interesting things over the stay. 

The service was great. It isn't a fancy hotel, with all-inclusive and a grand breakfast-buffet, but rather a cozy guesthouse with breakfast included, specially cooked for you, be it a simple toast and fried egg or something local that youve never tasted before. Just talk to Molly, she will take your preferences into consideration! 

The rooms are big enough, the much needed AC works well, and the hotel is located in a small village, so you get that feeling that you are actually in the country, not in a tourist-western-built complex.

Great vacation over christmas!

So locating the place proved to be a challenge however it was found. Must admit the place has potential very clean and well put together. The view promised was very far in the distance and beaches are not in walkin proximity however again this was not the deal breaker. The care taker appeared to be quite polite till the rules came out. Now with every establishment of dis sort rules are imperative however a limit is needed. First we were told on numerous occasions to take d ac off even takin into consideration we were in d room wen in use. At one point she came into the room to take d lights off which at d time were in use. Everything posed a problem to this individual. Our group rented the entire apartment so everyone was quite frustrated wit this treatment. As promised fr d info given at bookin 2 kitchens were made available on checkin in the said individual acted as if she was doing us a favour by lettin us use "her kitchen" down stairs. .. all in all ive been to quite a few placea johnsons, soleil villas, jus to name a few... but this apartment was d worst in service by far.... as I always say u live n learn n d lesson learnt is never again to Vu point guest house

Poor service for paying customers...

nestled in the local town of Bethel by local homes. Up the hill from the Mt. Irvine Hotel.  Walking to and from the beach is not practical.  Nice quite very clean place.  House Host Molly is a gem and did a fav job.  Rooms are spacious, very clean, w/ a/c.  Main areas may not be a/c.  Lovely balcony for viewing.  Great communial kitchen and refer use.  Can be a romantic get away.  You need a car in my opinion or Molly will organize pd rides.  Lots of local places to eat and swim a short drive away.  Mt. Irvine is great if you want to have a nice spendy meal.  Recommend and would stay here again.
