Otuhaka Beach Resort

We stayed in this resort for 20 days with our friends and we had a very good time. As already written, this resort is not suitable for families, but for young, active people.

It is the cheapest option directly by the sea and the beach is really beautiful there. We stayed in one of the bungalows with toilet and shower. If was not particularly fancy, but it was definitely worth the price.

Dan is a cool guy, he will arrange everything for you like the traditional food umu, or taxi, roundtrip etc..

If I would visit Tonga again, this resort would be the first option for me.

We booked not expecting too much as we had taken the budget option (where else can you stay on the beach at that price?), but even so the state of the amenities could have been a lot better.  

The beach was awesome and there was a pool table, ping pong table, volleyball net, basketball net, but the beach chairs need repairing - the protruding rusty nails were dangerous for children.

Dan, the owner, was very obliging when we asked for something specific, but it felt like we inhabited a bit of a ghost resort.  We didn’t really see anyone else the entire time we were there – staff or other guests. 

The friends with whom we were travelling stayed in the apartment (two bedrooms, bathroom, living room, kitchen, and hot and cold running water), which was a good option as we were self-catering but the oven did not work and everything needed a good clean.  

Our superior room (one main room, bathroom, cold water only, no kitchen) had obviously been shut up for a while and took a while for the musty smell to clear. The lino was ripped and the shower was in dire need of a clean.  We did bring our own sheets and towels.so that helped.. The cold showers didn't worry us but one night there was no water at all.

The apartment was only available for half our stay so in the end we decamped to another resort, as it would have been too difficult to self-cater without the apartment.

The resort did have a restraint/bar and the prices seemed reasonable.  We ordered a couple drinks but we didn’t order any food because we were self catering.

Overall, being disappointed it is a shame, as the location is fantastic and the resort has such potential if given a bit of an overhaul and some enthusiastic staff. Best suited to backpackers, it was tricky with small children.

It’s easy to get from there to Nuku’alofa on the bus and there several are other resorts just a short walk down the beach – the Vakaloa has a really decent cultural dinner show on Friday so definitely do that.  None of the other resorts on that beach offer the option for self-catering except the Ha'atafu Guest House.

P.S. Tutu the dog was healthy and happy.

Good beach, but resort label a bit optimistic.

I brushed aside the bad reviews on tripadvisor and went anyway too, thinking maybe it had improved....or people were being picky...

Was not expecting much at the price we paid but in my opinion there is a clear difference between rustic and clean. Booked a beach hut 3 months in advance, got all the confirmations, turned up and found there were no huts available and were sharing a "deluxe " cabin(unlockable adjoining door) with  another couple and their kids. The hut was infested with ants, who were all through my backpack by morning, there were pubes on the soap and the beds were rock hard. And while I realise animal noises cant really be controlled, be aware of the insomniac rooster who crows every 30 minutes through the night...you have been warned!

 The guy taking dinner orders really really needs to develop some people skills and if he wants to take out his anger at the world by kicking dogs around he shouldnt really do it in front of guests.....

Dont be fooled by the website/s they make this place look/sound a lot better than it is.....

Booked 6 nights, stayed one....

This place is a disgrace - we didn't expect much except the basics and they were so bad and was falsely advertised. No pick up from the airport, bed sheets filthy showers useless no flushing toilet, no running water, rubbish all over the place and felt very unsafe. Beach was full of glass - no breakfest or wifi as advertised. We paid before we got there so couldn't leave but the worsed thing is, it has so much potential as it is in a good location - no food so had to visit other near by resorts.. Just really disappointed but we did find Tonga a really beautiful place

2 friends and I just returned from a week in Tonga. Spent our first night here. Firstly, owner would not pick up from airport so had to pay $80 taxi. Second, accommodation we had paid for- roof had caved and floor very damp, everything inside was wet. Owner made us pay quite a bit extra to stay in a different room even though there was no way anyone could have stayed in the room we paid for! Rooms were disgusting, sheets were covered in red/yellow/brown stains- we later realised this is because they hand wash their sheets (if at all). Accommodation pretty far from any shops or restaurants and no food was available at hotel. The hotel owner was very rude and made us feel uncomfortable from the beginning. Left immediately next day, he made us pay $80 to go back to town even though he was going there anyway to pick his children up from school. We had paid deposit on hotels.com, but he refused to acknowledge this and said that he received no deposit. Tried to rip us off hugely. Seemed to have something against females because other young man in car wasn't charged at all for the journey back to the city. When we queried this, we got very irate and began shouting at us which was a little scary, and did not feel comfortable to be in a car with him. Absolute rip off and an idiot of an owner. We stayed in lovely accommodation the rest of the time and it was the same price he tried to charge. DO NOT STAY HERE!!!
