Yoko River Kwai Resort

The Yoko Riverkwai Resort is one of the most remarkable examples of visionary, or outsider, art in the world. While many of the reviews describe it as quirky or unique, it is one single man’s artistic vision and if that is kept in mind then it’s no longer a funky hotel on a river but something else altogether. The owner, Mr. Anan, has designed every element of the quite spectacular art and when seen from this perspective the astonishing breadth and depth of his creativity and masterful attention to detail is nearly overwhelming. A man of means, Mr. Anan, has accomplished (or, is still accomplishing, for the place is seems to be yet expanding) what very, very few artists of any kind, never mind outsider artists, have been able to- a sprawling and immersive series of assemblage galleries, functional art, collage and architecture. If you are a fan of installation art or outsider art such as Watts Towers in Los Angeles, or Tyree Gunton’s work in Detroit or the temporary city of Black Rock City, NV and want to experience more work of such immersive vision and, truly, of a scale almost never encountered in secular art, this place is for you. Is it worth a 3 hour trip all the way from Bangkok? If you’re on the fence about seeing the River Kwai historical sites and the also spectacular Hellfire Pass memorial and love art of type I’ve mentioned, then this should tip your decision to the yes column without hesitation.
