We loved the time we spent at Riverside hotel in the beautiful and quiet island of Koh Mak. Our idea was to stay one month at the island so we spent the first couple of days in a resort while spotting nice places to stay for a longer period. After checking many, we finally decided to stay at Riverside and it was a great choice: big charming wooden huts, next to a natural pond and very quiet ...although in the very centre! You can enjoy plenty of restaurants and cafės on foot (do not leave without trying the homemade cakes at Ball Café next door!). Be aware that more than a hotel is an Airbnb kind of rental but René was always there when you needed anything. We loved it!

We stayed in a very large and comfy bungalow, plenty of space and a great relaxing balcony outside with river view indeed. Very quiet and a good place to stay if you like nature. We were there in low season so not many people around, nice and quiet.

I was not impressed when I saw it first time because I was aiming on staying on the beach (I mean, I was looking for a beach front bungalow, but my partner he loves it at first sight. We could get a bungalow for one night, the owner (Mr. Muller) said, but we were lucky enough to be able to extend our stay. The bungalow is clean, big and has all you can ask for. I can only recommend this place and it is very affordable. Oh, if you like fishing or fresh water...the place is surrounding by ponds.

Not quite sure why some reviews aren't 4/5 star for this place as the food is excellent!

We ordered two different curries, both came out within 20 mins and taste amazing.

Visited the restaurant twice and both times, our meals were amazing. The Thai food was some of the best Thai food we have ever had (especially the Massaman). The food came out really quick and the service was great. The bar has a really good atmosphere and is good to stay for drinks. All reasonably priced!

So, me and my girlfriend travelled to the little paradise that is Koh Mak, and we were recommend to stay at Riverside by a friend.  The resort is laid out slightly weirdly in that there are beach side bungalows (not riverside) and up the road, the main resort is around 100yards down the main walking street.  The main resort comprises of  accommodation and an amazing open sided bar with comfy hammocks and lounging spaces as well as tables to eat at and a pool table etc.  Its quiet with chilled music.  Food is really very good and a decent price, the (Swiss) owner is trusting and about as  chilled as a guy gets.  He's been on the island a long time and will always offer to help if you need anything.  
Don't forget your insect repellent as you'll be savaged from insects from the river! 

Our Bungalow was beach side.  It was basic in its design, had AC and was perfectly serviceable.  The bathroom was pretty crumby mind and the toilet blocked every time more than a wee was put down it and the WIFI is pretty ropey, but this is to be expected on a small island like Koh Mak.  If you can't handle these little issues then you're better off on a bigger more populated island. I really wasn't that put off by it.

The beach sadly was slightly wrecked from some stormy weather the previous week but they were slowly clearing it as we were there (a lot of rubbish namely plastic had washed up on the beach - something for us all to think about).  The beach is quiet and has a few hammocks under palm trees and plenty of space.  Its not the most beautiful beach on Koh Mak, but its certainly not a bad one either! 

The process of booking, is about as simple as it gets and simply e-mailing the owner will secure you a place.  

Price wise, well there are cheaper options but costing us 1600baht a night (around £30) was very reasonable especially as we went in their high season. I personally liked the "left to it" type arrangement but if you like your hosts to be at your beckon call or you're a fussy traveller then avoid Koh Mak and Riverside and hit up a big resort else where.  If however, you like your paradise to be basic, chilled and devoid of modern distractions then this is the place for you

We came here for dinner and were pleasantly surprised!
We had the Riverside burger and a Massaman curry and both were really tasty and the price was good. The only gripe is that took way too long to get the food, around 45 minutes and it took almost an additional 10 minutes to get the other meal.

We were satisfied when leaving however.

Top Curry and Location!

We arrived for a family dinner in high season (January), the service was very slow we ordered several dishes (steamed-fish, vegetables, chicken, etc.) ... all the food we asked for mild that there were children ... the dishes from the kitchen slowly for more than an hour and a half various grounds, the fish came with lemon and chili, spicy, even adults who live in Thailand have not been able to eat it ... all the dishes are "swimming" in sauce, simply, bad taste, (store-bought bottle full of sugar and chemicals)
Almost all the dishes remained on the table, including fish left intact ... as we ask for the bill (1600 baht including fish, of course), took the plate with the fish to the kitchen and eat in front of us by one of the workers ... Shame! The owner noticed everything and see all the food stays on the table and said nothing ... just wanted the money !!! greed! no service oriented! :(
But straight away went to SWISS SAWADI and we are left with a good taste at the end of the evening

Very poor, expensive and disappointing

Should have paid attention to the reviews that told us to stay away. We ended up trying it on a whim and were very sorry.  Never ever go there. 

There are a ton of Thai owned restaurants to support instead of rude europeans.
