I recently stayed at Drifters with some friends. The location is beautiful and the resort is directly on the beach. The owner/manager Jilly was incredibly kind and welcoming, and was happy to talk with us over dinner and some drinks. When we first arrived, the saw the chef coming out of the sea with fresh octopus which we then ate for lunch. It was delicious, and the rest of the food while we were there was fresh and did not disappoint. Drifters is a little bit far from everything, but it adds to the charm and relaxation. Would highly recommend. 

Tuma/Jili was really welcoming, and often sat with us if we wanted. Really nice bungalows at a good rate. Ushongo beach is amazing and this is probably one of the best places to experience it, reasonably priced food, drink and lodgings with great quality.

This place has the best location! The beach is amazing and the atmosphere is great. Herman (the chef) did an incredible job making the communal dinners for the week that we were there. Would recommend!

We (me, my husband and our sons of 8 and 10) stayed at Drifters Lodge for 2 nights in a beach bungalow and it was fantastic. Off the beaten track; beautiful beach, fantastic host and great food. With very little tourists it is really a place to relax and enjoy the beach and sea. We can definitely recommend this place!

For every penny this piece of heaven on earth grants you peace that you won't get on other crowded beaches on the Tanzania's coastline. The ambiance, service and food quality complements the relevantly good level of services. I would recommend it again and again.

Drifters and the sand

the pictures on Tripadvisor are old and do not reflect reality. 
It is almost abandoned, and there has probably never been any maintenance since it was built.
The prices was ok for the quality, but this due to Covid and negotiation, as nobody is around. After inspecting the rooms, and escaping from all other lodge around, I decided to stay in this one. The manager was sweet and deserved to be helped.  In normal time without covid, all of them take advantage of the situation, because there are a dozen of them sharing the beach and clearly you do not turn back, or you just drive hours for nothing.
Out of that, the beach is not clean and the back yard looks like junk yard. The reef is dead, as there was a time they was fishing with dynamite. But this is not lodge's fault.  Worse the Pangani river is throwing everything in the ocean, and with the stream the sea at this area is cloudy and not clean at all. So for snorkel diving just forget. So the Pangani post car picture dream is just an image of the pass.
What is lets say not too bad is that the manager is trying her best for a good cook. It was not too bad, but still very expensive. You just go next door in the village direction, and then you find a real cook, with delicious meals.  Now all of them apply the standard of price of a 5 star hotel in Mwanza or Dodoma.  I will say only one deserve this price.
