after the arrival of the paid accommodation, we were kicked out and reffered to other accommodation. Hotels.com has not refunded the money yet.

We absolutely loved staying here. The location is perfect. The private beach is beautiful. And the staff are amazing. Thank you Idi and Mao for being so kind and helpful throughout our stay. I’m sure we’ll come and stay again soon!

Traditional style bungalows with a seating area outside, most with sea view. Really friendly staff and a great place for R&R
My only negative is, Breakfast could have a bit more variety. 
When the tide is in the sea is like a bath. You will need beach shoes as there is mangroves along the shore. Great for diving and snorkeling.

Off the beaten track

Lovely lovely lovely location right at the beach with cosy little bungalows along the hill. Only a fan in the room but it worked just fine. The beds were comfortable and the mosquitonet was whole. Nice private balconies and the facilities felt fresh. We ate at the restaurant and it was good even though my fish was too small for the price payed. The Sahidi was very friendly and helpful with everything. Breakfast was good and the same as everywhere in tanzania, pancakes, fruit, toast and eggs served with tea or coffee. 

What made it great is the location and that it feels well taken care of. What makes it difficult to stay longer is the Marine Park Fee which adds another 23 usd / person / night. 

Lovely location and well maintaned.

The best way to enjoy the marine reserve, undoubtedly. We could make a lot of activities and the staf helped us to decide which ones we prefer. Special mention to Ally, great manager and person. I hope to come back again very soon.

Great staf and comodities - Good value for money

Actually my boyfriend and I came to mafia beach bungalows only because our other accommodation was fully booked. Afterwards we regretted that we had not stayed in Mafia Beach Bungalows before. Ali and his staff were super friendly and made you feel what it is like to live on Mafia Island. He prepared an incredibly good candlelight dinner for us on the beach and told us some awesome stories.

The highlight of our trip was that we flew to Mafia Island to swim with Whale Sharks. In the completely overpriced european hotel where we slept before, we were told that this was not possible at this time of the year. When we stayed with Ali he said that he could not guarantee that we would see whale sharks, but that in any case the possibility exists. We left Mafia Beach Bungalows at 6am in the morning and went far out into the sea in a small boat without any other tourists and finally swam with three whale sharks at the same time. We are incredibly grateful to Ali for this great experience and will never forget the days with him

Cosy accommodation and best cuisine on Mafia Island

My wife and I stayed for six nights over the new year. Ally, Mohammed, Leila, Sad, Said, Mao and all of the other members of the team were delightful, professional, and kind, they all went out of their way to make our stay special. Don't expect luxury accomodation and gourmet food, what you will get for this VERY reasonably priced lodge is clean, unique style and charming accomodation with simple but delicious meals, we were also treated to a massive traditional Swahili buffet on New Years eve on the beach, it was amazing. They offer all of the excursions that you might want to do on the island at much lower prices than the bigger operators and you usually get the boat to yourself !, Halfa (diving) really knows his stuff and has good quality equipment, he will take you to the most awesome dive sites, he will tailor the dive to suit your experience and you wont be disappointed. The snorkelling is equally wonderful.The beach is beautiful and lined with mangrove, the sea is tidal and shallow so be prepared to wait for it to come back in for swimming. The other resorts and the town are a few minutes walk along the beach, check out the gift shops in Utende, staying here also helps support the local community who are all so lovely and friendly. We had a holiday of a lifetime and will be returning soon. Thanks to all of the team, Mark & Sarah.

Excellent 

Very nice staff and activities at a 2 star lodge.  Be aware that if you stay on this side of Mafia Island you will be inside the Marine Reserve which adds $24.60 per person per day to your stay.  The snorkeling trip ($25/person) and visit to Chole Island ($10 + $4 island fee per person) to see the Fox Bats were excellent.  The snorkeling is world class and was the highlight of our visit to Mafia.

That said, this place has some problems (the last one, food, is a deal killer).  The bungalow we stayed in was sloped downhill, which is annoying and you have to be careful not to slip in the shower due to slope of the floor.  There is a "beach" right in front, but it's muddy and has Mangroves so not very good for swimming.  It's a good 15 minute hike up the beach in the blazing sun to a nice beach good for swimming (the point off of Mafia Island Lodge).  The worst problem is the food situation.  The breakfast (included) is fine, but lunch and dinner are terrible, and way overpriced (at $10 and $15 respectively) for what you get.  A pile of plain spaghetti with no meat and a little sauce is a $10 lunch?  Get real.  We opted to eat dinner each night at the beautiful Kinasi Lodge next door where they serve an excellent 3 course dinner (with desert) by candlelight for $15. 
 
The snorkeling is really excellent on Mafia Island, but I would not stay at Mafia Beach Bungalows again.
