We went to Matemwe Retreat on our honeymoon and absolutely loved it. The small number of villas mean you really feel in your own paradise. The villas are amazing. They have beautiful decks, the plunge pool on the second floor is incredible, and we generally loved it. The staff are also incredibly attentive, provide everything you need, and are super friendly. We couldn't recommend Matemwe Retreat more highly!!!

Hidden Gem!

Like at other Asilia properties, it is clear they are striving for perfection. Our villa was beautiful, with a huge porch and indoor bedroom and bathroom area. Upstairs was a gorgeous and comfortable open air seating area, lounge chairs, and a plunge pool. Air conditioning in the villa bedroom. Our butler Jems took great care of us, serving all meals at our villa, cleaning up, and looking after us. Each butler is only assigned one villa. I had a good massage at the lovely spa at the lodge and we enjoyed one of the pools there (there are 2). It was very quiet, for a couple of days we were the only guests there, so Nov truly is low season. Food was quite good—each day they brought us menus to choose lunch and dinner from. You can have pretty much anything you want for breakfast. They surprised us with a beautiful rooftop dinner (with our rooftop decorated in lights by Jems) including cake and singing for our anniversary.  The staff is wonderful and the property is gorgeous. The only issue we had was that our safe didn’t work, and they fixed it right away. I completely recommend this property.

4 Nights in Paradise

We were fortunate enough to get to stay in one of the four villas here and it was outstanding! The villa itself was spacious and well appointed, then add in the service-our butler, Ndaki, took excellent care of everything we could possibly want or need. Our chef, Gilbert, crafted exceptional food each day for all of our meals. We enjoyed massages that were so relaxing. A great place to recharge our batteries between safaris.

A slice of heaven

What a fabulous place to relax and do very little if you choose to.  After touring and safari for 9 nights, we were ready to chill and what a wonderful place to do that.  We did have plans to go around the island and visit places, however, we realised we didn't want more time in a car and less time in our beautiful villa.  The space and views are just lovely. As our the grounds of the lodge which you walk through to the beach.

Having a butler taking care of you is very special, so we felt very priviliged.  Razel the hotel manager was brilliant checking in on us and making sure we were being well looked after.  We stayed 6 nights and apart from walks along the beach and some activities we did very little but relax and enjoy. We enjoyed our reef walk and snorkle trip with Ibrahim, he pointed out fish we would never have seen.  

Swimming in the sea is limited to high tide (every 12 hours) but we swam in the sea at least once every day.  This seems to be the case in most places in Zanzibar.  The sand was like powder, so soft and the sea so blue, beautiful.  If swimming in the sea is important to you, check the tide schedule and water heights, higher near the full moon.

We had been concerned 6 nights would be too much as we are active people, but no,  we could have stayed longer and we were sad to leave.  Well done Razel your staff are a credit to you, we are already wondering when we can come back.

My first experience in Zanzibar was everything I was hoping for!  The level of service and kindness that I experienced at Matemwe was outstanding. Everyday I felt that I was truly welcomed to be there, I have never felt such personal warmth and happiness when staying somewhere.  The staff was exceptional and should be praised for what they do and how they do it. 
The food was outstanding at EVERY meal and it was very special to have a candlelit dinner set up in different locations each night.  I felt like a Princess! 
It is very private and quiet at Matemwe, surrounded and hugged by nature which is EXACTLY what I wished for.

Traveled here with our whole family and the staff was accommodating and caring of everyone. Loved all the amazing people working at the lodge. The outings were incredible and very educational, and super fun. I would recommend this lodge and activities it offers!  

Beautiful and relaxing Oceanside vacation

We had high expectation of this place, but our stay with Matemwe Retreat was even better then we could’ve hoped for. George was an amazing butler who knew perfectly when to be silent and when to converse. We would 100% recommend this retreat if you’re looking for a getaway honeymoon feeling with all the luxury you can imagine. 

Amazing service, the most beautiful and the best food.

The stay was incredible. The location is fantastic and the staff is very warm and hospitable. A must do! It feels like you’re one with nature and the sound of the ocean is so soothing. The whole vibe of the place is unforgettable. 

Beautiful location and great service

We just had a magical stay at Matemwe! We were welcomed with friendly smiles and a delicious hibiscus drink while Razel, the hotel manager, gave us a tour of the property. The staff is helpful, friendly, and always within reach, all while not being overbearing and allowing us our privacy. 
Razel is incredibly thoughtful and is clearly doing a good job in keeping the staff motivated.

On our last day we were surprised with a cake to celebrate our birthdays (all in August), along with 12 of the staff celebrating with us with beautiful songs, which made us feel incredibly honoured. Attention to detail and thoughtful gestures such as this one are part of what made our stay so memorable.

The room 
We spent the first night at a beautiful bungalow - one king size bed on the main floor and a queen bed on the second floor. A hammock on the back porch overlooking to sea a perfect place to relax. 

The next morning we moved to the beach house - it comfortably accommodates 6 guests (2 bathrooms, 2 independent bedrooms on the main floor, and two single beds on the second floor). It has its own private pool, and dining area fully equipped with drinks (fresh water, tea, pop, beer, etc). James was our butler and he is one of the most upbeat people we’ve ever met - always ready to help and make our stay even more special!

Rooms were impeccably clean, linens were fresh and crisp, and the net around the beds was one of the best we’ve seen in all our trips in Africa. 

Food & Drinks
Fantastic food! There is a set menu you can choose from and there was always an option (or two or three) that for everyone. Plus, if for some reason nothing in the menu appeals to you, they’ll happily make something especially for you if they have the ingredients available. 

We had dinner on the beach one evening, beautifully prepared with flowers and candles - it was a lovely surprise!

The drink menu was nothing to scoff at. Othman at the bar prepared us delicious margaritas, pina coladas, gin and tonic, and  vodka with freshly squeezed sugar cane juice (highly recommended). Large selection of wine as well.

Activities
We weren’t there for long, so the only activity we went on was snorkeling off of Mnemba island, which started on a high note with a swim with dolphins. We also saw plenty of fish and colourful starfish.

The beach
Sand as soft and white as flour, clear, turquoise warm waters - need we say more? There are sea urchins but not in the portion of the beach that is maintained by the hotel - we spent a lot of time on the beach and had no issues. They also have water shoes you can wear if you want to.

Conservation efforts
Last, but not least, their conservation efforts are impressive. They work closely with the village and their representatives and support the school and other important -/- such as the medical house they’re helping build. We also noticed their care for the environment, which we much appreciated.

Flawless!

We stayed at Matemwe Retreat on the recommendation of a friend who enjoys the ambience, touch of luxury and the warm staff. We chose this as our luxury honeymoon retreat and could t have had a more enjoyable stay. It was wonderful - a must visit!
