Fabulous friendly place to stay. We stayed here for 2 nights. Original intention was 1, but having followed Chumbe on FB for more than a year, I was so impressed with what they did we stayed 2 nights as we knew our money was going directly to an incredibly worthwhile cause. Keep it up guys! The quality of the coral reef is incredible and diversity of fish immense.

Fabulous friendly place to stay - conservation, education and eco-tourism at its best.

This might feel like paradise in perfect weather, but we unfortunately had very windy days for our two-night stay on the island. Snorkelling was only possible for an hour, and given the tide schedule there was no swimming off the beach during most of the day. Yes, there is a forest walk one can take and maybe stretch to 45 minutes. 
So it depends on your attitude: while we didn’t mind sitting and reading and disconnecting for the rest of the time, it felt like a very overpriced quiet time. 
The cabins are “back to nature”: no doors or windows (meaning you share your cabins with all the critters), no plumbing (compost toilet and rainwater shower), and of course no air conditioning ( 24/7 hot and humid).  On the positive side you can pack super-light: bathing suit, flip flops and the lightest shirt will do for those two days (it all will be damp anyway). 
A few people who booked multiple nights left after the first night - it can be challenging to sleep in the heat with all those bugs (despite mosquito net).

The food was good, the staff was caring (other than loud music during the night from the staff lodge), and of course you money helps the conservation effort for the reefs!

Very weather-exposed experience - not for the faint of heart!

It was really a new moment in our lifetime, and  discovered a lot of uncovered things from our side, nature, eco tourism, sustainability, humanity, and friendship assistances. There is no need to worry about where to execute your beloved holiday,

We had a great time in Chumbe and would highly recommend this experience to anyone looking for something a little less conventional. 
It met our expectations and was exactly what we had hoped for!

As the island is very small there really isn't much to do outside of Snorkeling and a relatively brief walk in the forest or on the other end of the island beach during low tide but that is why it's such a great place to really disconnect, relax and get in touch with the surrounding nature and appreciate the simple things. On our first day there, we were lucky enough to see one of the most beautiful sunsets we've seen.
 
The bungalows are super authentic and adequately equipped and they are cleaned every day.  
As far as the food, the 3 meals per day included the full board package were truly amazing. The food was healthy, simple yet delicious – without a doubt the best food we had during our 10 days stay around Zanzibar (Stone Town, Jambiani/Paje, Mbweni). 

The staff is truly lovely, very professional, and always available.


Great experience, I would highly recommend to anyone looking for something a little less conventional!

Brilliant trip and very well organised. We currently live on Zanzibar a short ocean view away but we still thought this trip worthwhile. It’s also fabulous that is trying to preserve marine life. As soon as we arrived on the sand bar and walked towards the lighthouse we felt we were on a bond movie.

It’s amazing - just go you won’t regret it

Wir haben uns kurzfristig entschieden, zwei Nächte auf Chumbe Island zu verbringen. Es wirkt nicht gerade günstig, daher haben wir ein wenig gehardert. Es ist aus unserer Sicht allerdings jeden Cent wert und wir wollen auf jedenfall wieder kommen! Dann auch etwas länger als zwei Nächte.  
Alle Mitarbeitende sind total liebenswert und bemüht, den Aufenthalt perfekt zu gestalten. Man erfährt viel über die Flora und Fauna. 
Das Riff zum Schnorcheln ist eines der schönsten und intaktesten die wir je gesehen haben. Im Dunkeln die Coconut Crab beobachten zu können ist wirklich fantastisch. Die Unterkünfte sind so liebevoll gestaltet und wunderschön. Hier ist wirklich alles ökologisch durchdacht! 
Wer also Ruhe sucht, umgeben von liebenswerten Menschen in wundervoller Natur (Unterwasser und Überwasser) ist hier genau richtig und sollte nicht vor den Kosten zurückschrecken - es wird sich lohnen! 
Und das unglaublich leckere Essen soll hier auch nicht unerwähnt bleiben. 

We decided on short notice to spend two nights on Chumbe Island. It seems a bit expensive, therefore we considered if we sould go. 
However, from our point of view, it is worth every cent and we want to come back in any case! Then also for a little longer than two nights.  
All of the staff are totally lovely and keen to make your stay perfect. You also learn a lot about the flora and fauna. 
The reef for snorkeling is one of the most beautiful and intact we have ever seen. To be able to watch the Coconut Crab in the dark is really fantastic. The accommodations are so lovingly designed and beautiful. Everything here is really ecologically thought out! 
So if you are looking for peace and quiet, surrounded by lovely people in wonderful nature (underwater and above water) this is the perfect place for you and don't be afraid of the cost - it will be worth it! 
And the incredibly delicious food should not remain unmentioned here. 

Einmalige Erlebnisse auf Chumbe Island

Beautiful rustic eco lodge raising awareness about coral reefs, forests and ecology. Very passionate staff who have been there for years. Beautiful outdoor dining with amazing views. Lovely huts (stayed in no 7) with hot water. No flushing toilets only composting which some may find unusual. Lovely food. Great snorkelling (day and night). Nighttime saw several humongous lobsters the size of coffee tables, squid, cuttlefish, octopus etc. All in all a lovely experience.

Unusual retreat getting back to nature

We opted to stay for 2 nights which I would highly recommend to get the most out of enjoying the activities on the island. The staff are so passionate about the conservation of the ocean and marine life - it’s really impressive. The food is excellent and the experience of staying in the bamboo huts is wonderful. Thank you!

Fascinating!

Chumbe Island was out of this world.  It was like a private island paradise.  We had only five people on the day I visited.  We were picked up by boat and transported to the eco-lodge. For those imagining compromises for an eco-lodge, let me assure you this was no hardship.  Beautiful two-story huts with hot water and flush toilets, a place to charge your electronics, and even Wi-Fi.  Food was very good (how do they prepare such good meals?).  The beach was gorgeous with lounge chairs and two covered swinging beds.  The snorkeling was amazing -- 90 minutes during the day and 45 minutes at night.  We saw reef fish, an octopus, lobsters, eels, rays, a turtle, and a lionfish, among others.  At night, the fish were attracted to the light and at the end of our swim, we stood still, and thousands of tiny neon blue fish surrounded us, and then a minute later we saw hundreds of small eel-like catfish swimming all around us.  On land, the Coconut Crabs were so much bigger and plentiful than I imagined.  The nature walk with the climb up the lighthouse was another highlight.  The staff were all first rate -- so kind and generous.  Bottom line is that I wish I booked more than one night at this amazing place.  I will never forget it!

Chumbe Island was best adventure when visiting Zanzibar

We spent 3 nights on Chumbe Island which is a unique eco lodge. The lodges are built out of local materials employing solar lighting and solar heated water and using composting toilets. The water used is all rain water as there is no ground water on the island.  Our unit was number 1 near to the light house and set back a little from the sea.  The double bed took up most of the upstairs and had a lovely view out to sea. The window was shaped like a giant leaf and was woven from palm leaves.  On lowering it with a rope we got a lovely breeze and view of the sea. 

Downstairs had a day bed and chair and table.  The accommodation was simple but sufficient for ones needs.  

The highlight of the visit was going out to the reef to snorkel. The coral is beautiful - teaming with fish.  Kopa was our guide and was an excellent teacher explaining the marine life and the importance of conservation.  The most special experience was the night Snorkel. It was magical. 

The meals were lovely freshly prepared and featuring fresh fruit and sea food.  Swahili style food.  

A most memorable holiday and so good to see Chumbe's wonderful work protecting this reef working together with local communities.

If you don't want to pay to stay overnight I recommend a day trip where you can snorkel and have the lunch and walk in the forest.
