PPalmyra, also called Tadmur, Tadmor, or Tudmur, ancient city in south-central Syria, 130 miles (210 km) northeast of Damascus. The name Palmyra, meaning “city of palm trees,” was conferred upon the city by its Roman rulers in the 1st century CE; Tadmur, Tadmor, or Tudmur, the pre-Semitic name of the site, is also still in use. The city is mentioned in tablets dating from as early as the 19th century BCE. It attained prominence in the 3rd century BCE

That was Amazing

Went there in 2008. It was truly a breath taking experience. It's just saddens me that the city is in control of Islamic State and most of the ruins have been destroyed :(.  Hopefully peace will be restored to Syria so we can see what's left of what was an amazing country 

Never Visited

We didn't stay but did pop in for a drink to see the ruins at sunset. As it is set in an enviable location. The bar was a disappointment and the staff rude and surly which was a shock as we had had such a fantastic reception from everyone in Syria. I ordered a white wine which was undrinkable, which one would expect in town as Syrian wine is not the best but in a 5* with 5* prices to match, it was a bit embarrassing having to ask to get it changed,

One has to be careful with this hotel as, we presume, it has some excellent rooms for non-escorted tour travellers. The rooms where tour groups are 'nighted' seem to be in a bit of an add-ob facility--long wooden corridors. Rooms are small but charming as they creat the impression of being in a bit of a tent. Shower's were a problem as drainage was poor and every shower resulted in a flooded floor. Rooms were clean and comfortable albeit a tad cozy.  Food at meals was exceptional--diverse and of fine quality. Staff were delightful and attentive althouh, as is common in Syria, tourist related staff still need some customer relations training.  The hotel location is wonderful--bring a flashlight and wander very proximate ruins in the dark. The usual array of camel ride providers and somewhat aggressive vendors haunt the hotel's entrance. Hotel staff eventually chased them off the  immediate property.  They will appear almost anywehre there are toursists and once a bus departs the hotel for the sight they literally scooter off to meet you elsewhere. The Ruins at Palmyra are incredible and well worth an extended visit..

Fabulous Location--Quaint Little Rooms for Large Groups--Great Intro to Syria

Since a few months the hotel has been taken over by the Turkish Dedeman chain. There were almost no guests when we were there. We got the impression that the aircondioning was limited to 50% of its capacity for this reason or maybe it is just no good at all, which was somewhat uncomfortable with July temperatures being what they are out there. 
The quality of the room is ok, but the furniture starts to look tired. The food is good and so is the breakfast. . The main reason for staying is the location. It is within walking distance of all the ruins and the oasis as wel. The pool is a nice bonus too. 
It is ok for a night but quite expensive in relation to its quality.

New management in the Palmyra

A short review as we only stayed one night. We stayed in a suite on the same floor as the lobby, views of the ruins from the window. Room very spacious, clean. Staff helpful. Its a 2 minute drive from the ruins. Food very good at dinner (a buffet). There seems to be alot of tourist coaches which come here for the night. Only thing I found lacking was that when we got up @ 5am to see the sunrise (which is popular at Palmyra), there was nowhere to get coffee etc, even when we got back, so we went back to bed.
