We stopped here on spec on our way through to Italy. 

Rolf and Ranulph were charming hosts and gave us a lovely room. They speak a number of languages and go out of their way to give a friendly and helpful  service

Breakfast was traditional and plentiful, the coffee worth a special mention. Gluten free bread is offered.

The bedroom was warm and beds very comfortable. Views amazing and as an overnight stop just before St Gotthard it is just off of the motorway and free of noise.

There is a restaurant in the hotel open for Summer months and a traditional Italian restaurant over the road which has a good selection of vegetarian options.

The Star and Post is a fantastically beautiful and painstakingly maintained hotel in the gorgeous Alpine village of Amsteg. With its exceptional service I enjoyed an amazingly relaxing, enjoyable and memorable stay. The owners make you feel very welcome (in at least four languages), with warmth and discretion and incredible attention to detail. There are sweeping mountains all around and great walks/ day trips/ historical sites everywhere you turn. The hotel has the charm and personal care of the old traditions-- like a small scale, personalized Wes Anderson Grand Budapest Hotel-- but with a friendly, relaxed, modern atmosphere. The place is drenched in history going back centuries with books and pictures from all the eras of Switzerland, Uri, and the Alps. Every day there's an excellent breakfast buffet with delicious coffee, cheese, fruit and more, and great spaces to hang out in. The evening meals, home cooked with Michelin-level skill, offer lots of variety and delicacy and you leave very satisfied: there were wonderful home-baked rolls, starters and main dishes, and the Paris-Brest I had on the last night was legendary. Come to Amsteg for the Star and Post, as a break from Zurich or Geneva, on the way to Italy, Germany, or France, or as a rejuvenating destination in the quiet heart of Switzerland. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED-- they really know what they're doing!! 

We were on a biking trip, and stayed here for the first night after biking from Lucerne.   The rooms were clean comfortable and bathrooms were nice and modern.  The 4 course meal provided for dinner was excellent and the European breakfast was also terrific.  Our hosts were extremely accommodating and friendly. I would recommend this hotel when heading through Amsteg. 

We stopped over at the Post und Stern as we hiked through the Via Gottardo. We thought that Amsteg was on the small side but the hotel looked nice, at least on their website. Plus, hotels located in small places can offer good value for money. As we arrived, we found the multilingual owners very friendly. They upgraded us to a nicely appointed suite. The home-made food was excellent and very reasonably priced. A place we would recommend to anyone looking for a stopover place in the area. 

We had a great time staying here before tackling the climb to Andermatt on our bikes. The rooms were spacious and modern and ours had a great view of the garden and the valley. We also had dinner at the hotel which was an excellent 3 course meal for a very reasonable price. And the hospitality was excellent - our bikes were stored safely indoors and when I forgot something at the hotel after checking out, the manager sent it by priority mail to our next address!

I spent  one night in this hotel with dinner and breakfest and can only tell that I had a great experience and can only recommend it to everyone. The owners are very nice people and wish all the best for the future

We stopped for lunch on our week-long hike and got one of the best meals we had in the region! Fresh salad, delicious pasta, great local desert and good coffee. The building is full of history and the owners were friendly - a great experience.

No doubt that the highlight of Amsted was the Hotel Stern and Post. Although it is only 3 star hotel, it feels much more and you feel there like you are at home.
The hotel is owned and managed by Rolf Welti and Remo Vetter. From the first moment you come in, you feel welcomed by the smiling guys who make a big effort to make you feel good. The service is excellent and the rooms are simple, clean and comfortable.
After a long day hike, or after a long drive from the North or the South towards or from the Gothart Pass, it is great place to sleep over and a great place for sitting and eating on the charming terrace of the hotel.

The single rooms are simple and clean which include a bath/shower and toilette and free wifi. This historical hotel was built in 1788 and is one one of Switzerland's first post offices, which makes it part of the Swiss Historical Hotels . The hotel also has a chef restaurant in the evenings for those looking to have a special dinner. For check-in make sure you arrive after 17:00 as the hotel is closed during the day and no one is there to open the door for you unless you already have a key! 
The owners are very friendly and will make you feel at home, even if its for a short stay.
