I did not get my money back when i canceled my stay. What a bad way to treat a customer. When you cancel i booking at least you should be able to get credit receipt for further stays, but in this case just No,No....

No money back

I arrived very late but arrangement were working perfectly to get my room. Really clean and comfortable. Not overly much space but definitely enough for a comfortable stay. Breakfast was excellent with local products and very good selection. Very quiet while still being located in the city centre. Will return!

A small personal hotel with service of a large business!

First, the good bits. Hotell Pilen is quite attractive to look at, in a handy location for the major museums and the university and is easy to find. It is also quite well-priced by Swedish standards and the quality of the breakfasts was very good.

Now the less good bits.

Our room had a dank and musty smell as a result of what I suspect was waste water leakage in the bathroom (certainly there was a constant small pool of water in one corner): it was curious that, not least because of the tell-tale smell, the cleaner had never reported this and it had never been fixed.

Also, the arrival process at Hotell Pilen is simply bizarre: you get advance instructions telling you the place will be unattended after 5.00 in the evening, which is actually when most of the guests coming by rail or air from Stockholm are likely to arrive (Sweden, you see: convenient hours for workers take priority over basic customer needs). But those instructions rely on a knowledge of Swedish (almost everyone staying there during our visit was American, British, Austrian or Czech and so English rather than Swedish was the language of communication) and following the alternative advance instructions to press a button on a keypad only yields a recorded message, unintelligible to any of the guests, again just in Swedish. As a result, like several other arrivees, we had to wait outside with our suitcases after a long day's travel until some other residents came back and let us in to the foyer themselves. 

Finally, in the same spirit of minimal customer service on the final morning the breakfast room was essentially unattended by staff so some of us couldn't place orders and had to go without (leaving people to their own devices is another widespread Swedish habit, we discovered).

Overall I'm not sure I could recommend Hotell Pilen to anyone from outside Sweden who expects more attentive and sympathetic service.

Tells you a lot about Sweden

We stayed there for a one night and arrived later in the evening. We had no problems to get into our rooms because of clear instructions. Room was adorable and clean which was great. 

Breakfast was delicious! :)

Pretty and cosy

This looks a lovely place - if u like very tiny rooms, but at least my room (n. 10) needs a lot of minor repairs. Shower without courtain, old beds, window's courtain that did not close down, TV with only Swedish channels (altough in the information sheet also BBC had to be available), etc..   Two paintings as decoration, probably worth 5$ each. For breakfast, I had to go to another building, crossing a small courtyard. When temperature is freezing, this could be a good way to wake up very fast!! Breakfast is good, but served in the underground cellar: if you are claustrophobic, better choose another place.  - or skip the breakfast.

Cozy hotel needs repairs

The hotel is small charm hotel. Our room was located in the building, yard. The building was old but renovated. The toilet was retro and the decor had a touch of country. The beds were good to sleep. Breakfast was excellent. The atmosphere was cozy and idyllic. We will come here again for sure. Especially in the summer the courtyard area is certainly beautiful. The hotel is almost in the center and everything is close by. Good and personal service. I recommend.

A nice hotel - make yourself at home

I was driving through Sweden and Finland to get to the northern part of Norway. Last minute before driving of, I decided to sleep at a hotel along the way and chose Umeå as my destination. Hotell Pilen made it possible to arrive late, something I value. I booked a room and minutes later everything was set. I received an email with instructions. 

The hotel itself is small, with different buildings. I stayed in the same building as the reception and breakfast area. My first impression of the hotel was very nice. Its hard to describe but i felt welcome and somehow nostalgic. The hotelrom was small and cozy. Perfect for one night. It was a shared bathroom and toilet in the building i stayed in. That was clean. 

Breakfast was served from 6:30. It may be one of the best breakfast I've had at a hotel. They had so much food and beverage to choose between, and there was fresh fruit and waffles!

I didn't get to talk to the staff that much, since I arrived late and left early. 

I'm staying here again, but next time I'm brining my husband and we'll stay more than one night. 

They have free parking on the other side of the hotel.
