Täljegården Lantgårdshotell

We stayed one night at Täljegården as part of a Scandinavian road trip. It is part of the Sundsvall tourist marketing area, but 80km inland. Moving in from the coast, you begin to feel that you're not in the usual tourist zone. While it shows up in a lot of the "camping" listings online, I would put it more in the B&B category. It is a quaint and traditional farmhouse with rooms inside and some cabins outside. No real spot to put a tent (though I think they would be open to it). The owners are super-friendly, but be prepared to practice your Swedish: grandma who runs it has a lot of patience, but no English/German/French. In all honesty, this adds to the charm. If you book online, be sure to have a print-out or an easy-to-read mobile to smooth the process. It is a working farmhouse, with chickens and other barnyard animals running around. It is exceptionally dog-friendly (their logo reflects this), and they have a frisky black Setter running around the property. Our dog would have been allowed to be off-leash the whole time, except that he got into the chicken feed! We stayed in one of the three cabins on the property. Spacious, comfortable and clean (if a bit musty). It could sleep 3-4 and had easy chairs Two of the cabins are joined together with a lovely deck/patio that overlooks the lake and cows in front of the property. A wonderful place to sit and enjoy the evening. The other cabin is a proper house and also has the shared kitchen/bathroom. We found it a great value at SEK320/night. One thing was a bit disappointing. On the website, they mention that you have the possibility to enjoy a "farmhouse breakfast buffet", made from their own farmed ingredients and for SEK60/person. We were expecting a fairly big spread of things (some cooked items, eggs, sausage/bacon, plus some bread/cheese etc.), but instead just got the classic Swedish open-faced morning sandwich, a hard-boiled egg, some coffee and orange juice. The quality was fine, and we could have as many sandwiches as we wanted, but only the eggs came from their own farm. From the description and price tag, we had expected just a bit more. You can also rent a small boat and go out on the water for the day. There are some villages with supermarkets not too far away, so it's relatively easy to do some grocery shopping if you need to. Bear in mind that this far out, Systembolaget closes earlier than in the city. The best part of Täljegården is the overall feeling. You feel personally looked after, the area is beautiful and it is super-easy to just kick back and relax. The farmhouse atmosphere simply confirms that you're out in the country, making it easier to get the city out of your head. Particularly if you are an animal (dog) lover, this is a great stay.
