Spent 5 nights here, the most comfortable 5 nights ever!  The hotel is cosy and warm even when the temperature drops outside, the rooms are of wooden construction but perfectly clean, and the ensuite toilet/shower room is modern with constant hot water available.  The beds are particularly comfortable!  Buffet breakfast is excellent and comprehensive, and there's an option to order extra items.  We had the porridge, which was freshly made, hot and tasty.  The reception staff are simply amazing, very friendly and welcoming and nothing is too much trouble.  They answered our questions and booked restaurants etc for us without any fuss.  There's constant (free!) tea and coffee available in the reception area, also alcoholic drinks available for purchase.  Don't let the "trapper" style appearance put you off, this is every bit as comfortable as any glass and plastic modern hotel, and twice as friendly.  Can't recommend Basecamp highly enough, well done and thank you for a memorable stay.

Comfortable, friendly and a great breakfast!

The positives first: The staff were friendly and helpful. It was clean, there was a good breakfast and it's in a central location
The negatives: The interior designer or architect. OK, so we get that it's meant to be like an african camp. But, if you're not in the first flush of youth, or have any mobility issues, you're going to struggle. Many of the rooms have double beds accessed by ladders, split floors, low and sloping ceilings over beds ( plenty of potential for concussion), and there are some steep stairs in the hotel. Which would be manageable were it not for the fact that you have to take your shoes off at the entrance, and everything is varnished wood - not ideal for sock clad feet. Respect to the housekeeping staff who had to clean the rooms and make the beds, becuse it cannot be easy. The breakfast room was just too small for the number of guests

See stars in your room - but not in a good way

I stayed for one night before a ship-based tour. My back had seized up on the way and I could barely walk. The charming receptionist waived their "no shoes" rule (since I couldn't take mine off without a lot of difficulty) and carried my bag upstairs not only without being asked but without even offering, as if it were completely routine. The next day, they again helped me with the bag and I was allowed to lie down in my room until well after usual checkout.

The place itself is not remotely like a sterile chain. My room was small but perfectly adequate, completely finished in wood. There's coffee and cookies on a table in reception all day. Breakfast was included and perfectly fine. 

I'll stay there again (if I'm ever in Longyearbyen, which I concede isn't terribly likely).

Quirky rooms, good location, great staff

Unfortunately, we only spend one night in this hotel. Planned were 2 but because of flights got cancelled we only spend one night here. We loved it from the beginning. Everything is made out of wood, you need to take of your shoes. At the moment it feels weird to do that but I certainly liked it very much. The room we were in was very spacious and had 1 bunk bed and another one. The beds were really comfy. It was very quiet during the night (daylight) so we had a very good night sleep. Breakfast was great with a lot of choices. Staff super friendly and helpful in case you needed anything. 

It is in the center of Longearbyen so everything is in walking distance. Lovely place. I can only recommend it.

Cozy Hotel - Fantastic Location

We loved the coziness and ambience of Basecamp Hotel! All surfaces are made out of beautiful wood - the breakfast was good and the staff were so friendly and helpful. You can tell they enjoy their jobs, helping travelers enjoy their small city. Located right in the heart of tiny Longyearbyen, we enjoyed eating at nearby restaurants and shopping in the local stores. I highly recommend this hotel if your looking for something more rustic. There are no TVs in the room, but do have a general TV room if that is important to you.

Cozy Hotel with Great Staff

The hotel is located in the centre of town close to the shops and restaurants. You can get a shuttle bus from the airport which drops you right outside. Its design is along the lines of an old hunting lodge with lots of wood, seal skin and related memorabilia. It is very warm and cosy. Most guests are on short stays, maybe waiting to join a ship to sail around the archipelago or to go on ski trips. It is very informal. The receptionists are very helpful and kind. I was on my own there for five days and they looked after me very well, sorting out some problems with tours. I had a very nice room, compact with a double bed and my own shower room. It was very simple. Many rooms have bunk beds. There is no disabled access that I could discern and stairs have to be climbed to get to rooms. The breakfast is the best I have had in a Norwegian hotel with lots of top quality options, hot food, smoothies etc.  You are permitted to make a packed lunch. The staff are very helpful. Coffee, tea and biscuits are available most of the time in reception where they also sell alcohol and soft drinks. You have to go out elsewhere for lunch and dinner but there is a lovely cafe nearby and several bars and restaurants a short walk away. There is also a very good supermarket which sells rolls and cakes. Various tour buses collect guests outside reception. So all very easy.

A relaxing stay in a quirky hotel

I won't beat around the bush--I LOVED Basecamp. I tried to get a reservation there and saw it sold out for months--when I arrived in town I dropped by and managed to get a room for one night after a cancellation. 

The hotel is very much of its place, with charming wood construction, comfortable en-suite rooms, atmosphere throughout, a delicious breakfast, and a wonderful staff and guest vibe. The location in the middle of town is also very convenient--right opposite the Svalbar. It isn't cheap but its worth it.

I note that as a vegetarian animal lover I did not love the dead corpses of foxes etc. hanging around. But frankly that is the history and ambiance of Svalbard, so much though I hope this represents the past rather than the future, it reflects a reality.

Amazing place

To be fair, I have not stayed at any other place there, but I have had a couple of excellent vists to this hotel and I will never book another place for coming trips. This is the spot to stay in my opinion. 

The location is perfect for getting around, at the upper part of main street with walking distance to everything. 

The building is made to resemble an old trapper hut, and has 16 uniqe rooms. So the atmosphere is very cosy and intimate, the guests few, and you feel you get to know the staff. 

There is no lunch or dinner service, but breakfast is great. Healthy, tasteful and original options. Try out the blueberry and liver smoothie if you dare, the missus loved it, or go for the more safe option of chocolate and banana. 

If you have a few hours of spare time I suggest spending them at the skyroom reading a book or just watching the lights outside change. I want something similar for my house! 

Last but not least is the help you can get from the staff. They have tours of their own, but will also help with booking other stuff for you. They know this place and people living there. 

I highly recommend this hotel. It is not the cheapest, but then again nothing is really cheap up there. Svalbard is a uniqe place where everything costs, but it is worth it for the experience.

The only place to stay in Longyearbyen

The pandemic doomed our Wedding Anniversary travel to Svalbard and in fact we never made it. Though we had a “nonrefundable” reservation, we were unable to —reschedule—(they are not the same thing!!!)  our plans we had travel insurance. We wanted no reimbursement. We just wanted to set a new date. Our Finnair flights plans changed several times, making our stop on Svalbard not possible.Our disappointment was great. Basecamp, which really does look amazing!!!, would not allow us to reschedule on our original booking. Basecamp offered to send a letter about our not staying in the hotel and so I forwarded that to the travel insurance, which was to no affect.. We were out a thousand dollars and felt there was no recourse in sight.I really only write positive reviews. This planning was just a victim of Covid and even though I was “vaccinated” (travel insurance), I still got sick (charged the full amount).
