We stayed in this hostel for two nights at first. The lady who runs the hostel is extremely kind, her english is good and she took great care of us. The place is really nice, surrounded by nature, a little further away from the center, which is what we preferred. Two days later we came back to this hostel after climbing Adam’s Peak. We were really tired and the lady was so sweet. We were soaked, so she made us some tea, told us to take a warm shower while making our beds, and offered us some cookies as well. Super super sweet woman. We had a lovely stay!

This was such a nice experience. We stayed here for one night and the the lady running it "Lelly" was such a gem. She was constantly helping out and making sure we have everything we need. Good conversationist, she knows English Arabic and Sinhalese. Not to mention, her heart of gold !

Recommend to stay there if you're looking for a super cheap place with free breakfast that she makes herself ... ask for whatever you want and she will make it happen.

The rooms are well priced with breakfast included - eggs toast banana and tea . There is a kitchen where you can prepare food and use the fridge, however to use the gas top costs extra. Location is just up the road from a supermarket where u can buy food and alcohol. If u arrive in the heat of the day get a tuk tuk from the train station as the walk up the hill is intense especially with a backpack

Kandy City Monkey hostel was about 20 odd minutes from the city center. I booked a private room that came with a sharing bathroom. The bed was noisy, window was sealed with a plank, and the wi-fi didn’t work except in the hall. But the best part about the stay was interacting with our host, Lata. She was this tiny lady in her mid forties, bubbly and ever so cheerful. Lata single handed managed the entire show at the hostel – from serving breakfast to doing the check in/check outs, cleaning the place and making sure there are no stray rowdy incidents with boarders. She loved Bollywood. When I first asked her name, in a playful tone she said ‘Lata...(paused, then trailed off)…Mangeshhhhkar’. She lent me her umbrella when it rained heavily that night and I had to go out to buy some dinner. The next morning, she was generous with the boiled eggs, toast jam and apples for breakfast. And when we checked out, she warmly hugged and kissed us on the cheeks. It felt like we were saying good bye to a family member.

For only 5 bucks a night with free breakfast it would sound like i'm nitpicking if I'd complain about something regarding this hostel. If you keep your expectations in check and if you keep reminding yourself that you only paid 5 bucks, you'd realize that you're getting a pretty good deal. It's very basic so don't expect much regarding amenities. Rooms were kept clean, but the bathrooms looked dirty and moldy, it would take a great deal of scrubbing and maybe a bit of repainting to make them look clean again. But as i've said, you wouldn't mind that considering the very cheap price for accommodations. Wifi was mostly reliable, and I was satisfied with security. They provided individual lockers in the rooms and the main door was locked at night. The location is kind of a mixed bag. It's a long walk to the city center (about 20-30 minutes), though there's a grocery about 5 minutes away so getting cheap food is not a problem. What makes this hostel extra special is Latha. She manages the place and she would make you forget any complaints you might have. She's more like a mother to all guests, she treated all of us as her own children.  For budget travelers, this is a really good option in Kandy as long as you don't mind staying a bit far from the city center.
