Stayed one night with two friends. Guy didn't really know what was going on. The room was basic, which is fine, but we paid 1900rps and the next night moved to ragnas beach hut which is close and much better and cheaper. The room at the back of our room wasn't really a bathroom or a shower and didn't work and was full of insects. Me and my friends couldn't even sleep because the wind blew the ill fitted roof and kept us awake. Don't stay here, there's plenty better options.

The room was just the bed. Nothing else. Small window, but too little for some fresh air, as the room was super hot and the ventilator almost useless. We had to ask for sheets. Toilet "bathroom" wasn't clean. also no paper nor basket, not even a roof. Also under the bed still things from the guests before. Worst stay in sri lanka.
also we paid the room and the staff came to our room to ask for more money. and instead of bringing the money back we caught him last second on the scooter, almost driving away with it.

Close to the beach not worth the money

Was good value for Arugam Bay and the room was simple but suited us fine as we were there mainly for the beach. 
Good bathroom facilities although they are open roofed so very hot during the day and could be slightly frustrating if it was rainy as no place to put clothes/towel to keep dry while you shower. 
The sheet was too small to cover the mattress, however the beds were very comfortable. 
Shop downstairs supplies snacks, drinks and toilet paper etc. 

Good Value

Moon Eyes is actually two places in one. Part of the site is actually the Crescent Bay hotel too. Both handle each other's bookings and help each other out so nothing massively has change since previous reviews aside from the tragedy that led to the changes. 

We stayed in two en suite air conditioned rooms and found them clean, comfortable, secure and just big enough. There are a wide range of other rooms AC and non AC available including a huge family room upstairs.

Before I get to the main review here are the basics: Great room. Great price. Incredible beach access just down a side street. Lovely little site. Fantastic staff. Very chilled atmosphere. 

Moon eyes only offers fruit juices but it has a brilliant little shop. Crescent Bay were just starting to offer food when we were there as the season started properly. Their prices are very reasonable and we found everything we had there to be very tasty. Initially food was taking quite a while to come but this was because we were so early in the season and they weren't fully geared up. I would say it is a good idea to let them know in advance what you want if you are eating there.

The site has a nice chilled sitting area around the back, a friendly dog called Ubu and all the geckos, palm squirrels and little iguanas you could ever want to see (not in the rooms though. We found these bug free and clean). 

Moon eyes is also the base for the local ADF charity. The Arugambay Development Forum is a group of local businesses owners and employees who do all they can to support the two local schools and the fishing villages. This area was devestated by the tsunami and the civil war and the ecology and community still have scars from both. The ADF promote environment awareness, work with NGOs, organised a half marathon whilst we were there and act as governors to the schools helping to raise funds and do citizenship education. Bear in mind that these are folk who every few years have to go and sign three year contracts to take low paid work in the Middle East to support their families and businesses and yet they still do all that they can to help those less fortunate than themselves.

We had a week booked. Imam from Mooneyes showed us not just the rooms there but those in other hotels to try to get us the best deal. In fact Imam was just brilliant all round. He contacted us via Booking.com, whatsapp and email right from the moment we booked and kept in touch until we arrived. Before the week was up we clearly were going to stay longer. 

Imam, Mahroof and their team are just amazing. The tourist stuff first... Mahroof runs Kiwi Safari (one of three that operate out of Mooneyes) and he is awesome. He took us round the local safari park and guided us to the ancient Buddhist temple. Mahroof also stood up for us and negotiated good prices with surf shops and other trip providers as we were long staying customers. He is also a fantastic guy all round.

Imam sorted everything. He never forced us but always had great suggestions. We did surf lessons, a safari, three ancient sites, a lagoon boat trip, visits to the schools (more on that later) and visits to the local villages. We ate in the homes of Arugambay folk and we were welcomed. Imam then sorted our onward journey and helped us get the best prices from then on.

We first stayed on to help with photographing the half marathon. Then having seen the utter lack of any sort of resources in the local school I, as a teacher decided to show that practical science could still be taught with normal materials. The ADF did all they could to support and they will follow up on the work we did. 

The hotel is great. The people who run it are better. The team of Safari drivers, tuktuk drivers, motorcycle delivery guys, shop staff and so on who work so hard to get you the best possible holiday also work incredibly hard behind the scenes trying to help their community. 

We did not want to leave Mooneyes and we've changed our travel plans to go back at the end of our break following a tour of the island.

Booked a week... stayed for three 

Not only Moon Eyes Beach Hotel is a nice place to stay, with rooms and cabanas but his owner is the best cooker around.
Ask him for fish dishes, prawns, kohthu prawms whatever you have in mind besides the dishes on the Menu, he will cooke it for you.
The rooms are traditional with verandas. 
This is a surfing spot with lots of surfers from around the world.
Very, very friendly staff.
Don't miss it when you go to Arugambay.

The best cuisine in Arugambay

We saw it by booking, but we went directly to this one at the entrance to the tourist area of Arugam bay, its owner very welcoming, we took all the doubts we had. We have a shared kitchen not very well equipped but functional, for the one who does not like to cook restaurant We were very cheap and the good thing is that the rooms are in a mini-complex decorated with palm trees and sand that make you feel on the beach.

How to be on the beach

We stayed in Mooneyes for 6 nights. We had one of the pretty bungalows, price performance very good! It was clean too! We also saw some of the other rooms and they were also tiptop! Located 10 minutes' walk from the center, nice quiet/ close to the beach. The atmosphere was cozy and relaxed. The owner was very friendly, funny and helpful. He gave us many good tips such as the TukTuk Safari (have seen crocodiles, elephants, and various other animals very closely). Price was ok! What's left to say: You cook incredibly deliciously in Mooneyes! Prace, frosts, vegetables, and portions at a really good price! The owner has made these great uncomplicated and I would love to keep choosing these great boudoyes and tuna under wraps!

Very good place to stay!!!!

The moon eyes at the entrance to Arugam Bay by the sea side is not the most stylish place in the city. But the welcome is very warm and the price is almost unbeatable and negotiable for long stays. Small dej copious, omelette and super good pumpkin (veg) Tassim watched over our surfing during our trip to the North. and organized a super nice safari for us in Kumana.

Very good for the price-quality ratio.

My girlfriend and I stayed here for five nights. The staff isn't much and they don't speak English very well, the room was very different from the ones in the photos. We waited two days to get two clean towels. The room was constantly filled with smoke because of the lady behind the guesthouse that was on fire, we woke up a couple of times coughing. The location isn't much. It's worth the price you ask.

Economical but room not conforming to description

Avoid it. We were placed in a messy room of four people with plastic chairs as a closet and nothing else for 8,000 rupees a day, far too much. Dirty bathrooms and I don't think ever cleaned in the two days we spent. Building still under construction with iron rots coming out of concrete.
