This is the second time that we travel in Korea for two weeks at a time staying only at hanok guesthouses. While we really enjoyed the hospitality at other hanoks during this and the previous trip, we were extremely disappointed by the lack of hospitality at Shinsiwa and cannot recommend a stay at this place in any way. We reserved the room several weeks in advance and noted that we prefer Korean breakfast. Since we did not get a reply, we had sent another mail. Two days before we arrived (at which time we could no longer change the reservation) we received a rude mail stating that the toilet is “outside”, and that breakfast consists of a bread, milk, jam and eggs. We had specified in the reservation that we will arrive at noon and would like to leave our luggage at the hanok. We had even informed them twice. However when we arrived no one was there. We managed somehow to make a phone call (no small feat without a local phone) to the phone number at the entrance of the hanok. The landlady told us that she knew of our mail but that check-in is at 4 o’clock PM. Nonetheless some time later she appeared and we could leave our luggage (this whole procedure is pretty disappointing when one has not so much time to spend in a city). The place is basic in comparison to other hanoks which we stayed at. This in itself would not be a problem. We were informed that “American” breakfast is in the fridge, where we found toast, jam, milk and eggs. Coffee is 1,000 won. We were told that we can help ourselves. There is a single hotplate and a frying pan. We stayed here on 3 January 2018. It was pretty cold at night, minus 5 degrees Celsius. The shed, in which the toilet is located, is indeed “outside”, located across the small courtyard. Once inside the toilet door was really hard to open from inside. To cut a long story short, this place is not at all worth 50,000 won/night for a double room, there are really nice welcoming hanoks everywhere in Korea. Places like this give Korean hospitality a bad name.
