HomeBase Melville - Hostel

Stayed more than two weeks in Melville house, as it is a friendly place on a relatively secure compound and with adequate facilities. Wifi works well, the showers are hot and there are kitchens to cook. Friendly enthusiastic staff that will help you to solve problems (well appreciated after I was mugged in downtown Joburg).

Melville neighborhood offers not only places to go out, such as the bars and restaurants on 7th street, but also hiking options in the nearby Koppies nature reserve and Botanical Gardens park area. Supermarkets like Spar and Pick&Pay are in the vicinity of the hostel. 

Inexpensive public transport to the city is available as well. Rea Vaya C4 and T3 are the numbers of the relevant buslines. Of course alternatively you can use Bolt or Uber taxis (not too expensive outside peak hours).

Pleasant hostel in a relatively safe area of town

Could have been a nice place if it wasn't for the male staff member that made me feel uncomfortable.
 I can't recommend this place.
Except for him the place is nice and clean and rooms are cheap. Melville is a nice place to walk around and visit pubs and restaurant

Staff problem

i stayed at homebase melville both at the beginning of my south african trip and at the end.  i stayed in a couple of other hostels during my trip to get a feel for different areas but i definitely had to come back to this one.   amazingly chilled hostel with a beautiful garden and poolside bar,  extremely clean and very laid back.  its located in a very studenty bohemian and also very walkable (unusual in joburg) area just outside the main city centre.  a very green area and just a short walk away you have lots of bars and restaurants plus a 24hr petrol station if you need midnight supplies.  you also have a shopping centre just down the road.

the best thing about this hostel though was the staff who made me feel so welcome and always had time to help you out with tourist info or simply just a nice chat.  big thank you to sam, mike, kirsty, brian and peter and everyone else who made me feel so at home.

also i must add that another reason to choose this hostel is the value for money - it was one of the cheapest places i found in joburg and frankly they could charge much more considering the quality of the facilities.

excellent hostel in a great area, and best of all amazing staff

Well based backpackers in a quiet area, couple of minutes walk from 7 Street, full of cool bars. A hostel made out of several building across 2 areas, one with a lovely pool. We stayed in one of the comfy and clean apartments with en-suite bathroom. Breakfast was okay.

Easy going backpackers

This was our first stop in South Africa. All the staff were very friendly and welcoming. They shared good tips on what to do in johannesburg and on the rest of our trip in South Africa. The rooms and swimming pool were very nice too. 

Very welcoming place

I arrived early morning after a very long flight. Service was great, stuff was helpful and friendly. The area around the backpackers has some really nice vibe to it. I will definitely recommend this place.

It was great

Absolutely amazing experience! The staff are unbelievably accommodating and friendly. It is a beautiful, vibey little spot and super affordable too. Will definitely be back and keep this place as my number one go-to accommodation for when travelling!
