This is the best place I have stayed in Johannesburg by far. The place is run by the most welcoming couple ever. They go out of their way to suit your needs and are on the tip of their toes ready to provide you with absolutely anything to make your stay an excellent one. There are heaters for winter time and the beds are warm and comfortable. The pool area is spacious and breakfast is top notch and healthy. Liz happily changes your breakfast everyday and enjoys making the dishes look extravagant and beautiful. If you are looking for anything in the area you can simply ask Liz and she will give some excellent suggestions for places to visit and tours to take. She even has contacts with many locals around and can 'hook you up' with the local tours when you want to go. The place is very friendly and I would recommend it to both holiday goers and business travelers. I will definitely be returning when I come back to Jhb in the future.

The warmest welcoming place in Johannesburg

We spent 2 nights at a Hundred Thousand Welcomes which we enjoyed.  It was a little tricky to find it because it is located in a gated community, with only one entrance that is open; Uber and taxi drivers tended to get a little vexed trying to figure out how to get into the community and to the B&B.  Also, there is no sign identifying it as the B&B, but we figured it out fairly quickly and were treated to  a very warm and enthusiastic greeting from Liz and Ian.  Liz and Ian did everything to make our stay enjoyable.  Liz has more energy than anyone I have ever met, and she and Ian clearly take a lot of pride in their B and B.  The room was large, very quiet, and quite comfortable.  It isn't lavishly furnished -- it feels like your own room at home, which is perfectly fine.  Ian cooked us a lovely breakfast each morning and our stay all around was very nice.  This was our first time in Johannesburg and it took a little adjustment to get accustomed to the level of security at all the upscale homes and at this B&B, which is in an upscale residential community. Seeing all the elaborate security measures actually heightened our concerns about safety, even though we had heard and read that the level of crime in Johannesburg has greatly improved over the last few years.  We certainly felt very safe at a Hundred Thousand Welcomes and can confidently recommend it.    If you stay at A Hundred Thousand Welcomes, say "hi" to Ian and Liz for us!

Extremely attentive hosts in this lovely B&B

A Hundred Thousand Welcomes is situated in a great location, close to Sandton City in a very quiet neighbourhood.  Our room was wonderful, with its own entrance, outdoor seating area and extremely comfortable beds.  Ian and Liz were exceptional hosts, always on hand and very helpful.  You feel like friends, not paying guests!

The B&B is a bit tricky to find after dark as a lot of the roads are closed off.  Ask for detailed directions to get there and do not rely on Google Maps or GPS.  You will drive around in circles!

Highly recommended for price, location, cleanliness, large rooms and welcoming hosts.

Excellent in every way!

This lovely B&B, run by the ever so friendly Liz and Ian, is just a hop away from the Sandton City shopping malls and the Gautrain. Situated in a very quiet neighbourhood I stayed in a spacious private room with a super comfortable bed, wonderful luxurious bedding and linen. The breakfast was prepared with love and according to my very wishes! I will never stay anywhere else again in Johannesburg!

A Gem in Sandton

We went to South Africa primarily for the World Cup and I found A Hundred Thousand Welcomes through the South African Venues website. Boy, what a great find! The B&B is owned by Liz & Iain, who were simply wonderful hosts. Their house is in quite a nice, quiet part of the city. Our room was clean, comfortable and a decent size. We had a microwave oven and a decent sized fridge so we could order take aways, and keep and re-heat any leftovers, which was very helpful as we saved money on eating out all the time. We also had a kettle and tea making stuff as well as biscuits.

Best of all the room was outside the main house with its own entrance, so we could come and go as we pleased. 

Breakfasts were to die for! Liz generally tried to make something different every morning, so some days we had the regular full English, on others french toast with bacon, and always, there was nice bread, muffins, fresh fruit, yoghurt and granola. I think we got fat just on the breakfasts! There were a number of other guests from around the world, who had also come for the World Cup, so the breakfast table was always interesting.

Iain and Liz were unfailingly helpful and gracious. They helped us out when we had a flat battery:  Iain used his car to jump start ours. They also tried to help us get tickets to some of the World Cup games, and gave us a vuvuzela when we were leaving!

All in all, one of the best places I've ever stayed in and it felt more like we had stayed at a friend's home than a B&B.

With respect to Johannesburg in general, please ignore all the scaremongering about crime etc. We felt very safe and the locals couldn't have been friendlier. Maybe it was the World Cup euphoria but still....

General tips: Make sure you rent a car. There's no other way to get around. 

For eating out: Check out Moyo restaurant at Melrose Arch. Food is not great but wonderful service and very entertaining.

Things to do:  Visit Mandela's house in Soweto, and the caves in Sterkfontein. The Lion Park is also good value.
