Royal Plains hotel has very friendly staff, it's well run and very convenient for me. It's a little out of town but local buses run nearby, and it has good facilities. It also has a local feel which I really enjoy.

Suits me

... At first I was clueless about people on this Island but I discovered their hearts' investments in this facility. I was assigned room 101. The air conditioner worked & a mini fridge was in the room. The room was sufficiently private where my laptop and personal items didn't require special handling. The bath area was tactfully clean and the towels, cloths & soap were provided by facility keepers. I took any of my concerns to Sir Nelson & team. They did their best to address them. For example: (1) the water pressure was low and I was initially without hot water. This was resolved within two days and there was hot water for the remaining 10/12 days. (2) transportation to ATM(s), initial shopping and my final transfer to Honiara for $75 SBD instead of $100 SBD, were all managed by the facility's staff members. I was more than happy to provide dollar contributions for what they were willing to do. (3) after the first week and among similar efforts as above in #2, i had a chat with Elizabeth and Raewin about ordering meal deliveries. Once we did the math, Elizabeth coordinated the purchase and preparation of fish, rice w/veggies. Plus, there was a enough for another meal. There were always bottled water dispensers available with refills. I was satisfied having hot water for green tea, ad lib. 

Ultimately,before & after walks, I managed to refresh in areas of decompression theory, physiology, physics, dive equipment, and general science for scuba divers!!!

Further, i had very informative discussions with locals concerning care for their environment and how the ocean is impacted. I visited St. Nicholas school & witnessed how they  build into their culture essential ways to improve their landscape.  Impressively hopeful stay at Tanuli Royal Plains Motel! ... My Study Place

We are an Aussie couple in our 70's, have just spent 10 days at Tanuli Royal Plain Motel and loved our time there. Our room & ensuite were clean with plenty of hot water in shower, lovely big fluffy towels, very comfortable queen bed. Air-con, fan all worked well, though fan a bit noisy. Our room also had fridge, tea/coffee making gear, closet, desk & 1 armchair We were in Room 115.There is a communal kitchen, which we used every morning for breakfast and also a communal lounge area, if you just have to watch TV or keep up with the world outside. There was a TV in the room, but we never turned it on. There is Small shop across the road, which stocks the basic of foods, but nearest café is about 3km away. We ate out for lunch & found a good selection of places. We always had good coffee (a must have) at various places. For dinner, we just had crackers/cheese, the latter can be found at the Bulk Shop, fruit from the Honiara Markets & a wine from Sullivans at approx. AUD$12 per bottle or up. Taxis work on the rate of SBD$10 per km (about AUD$1.70) and we found they didn't try to rip you off. The taxi drivers always knew where our motel was, so we never had to try & guide them, thankfully. Local buses are up the dirt road, a few minutes walk away, they are much cheaper at SBD$3 per person, (about 50 cents)but do make sure you have right change or close to it. The staff at Tanuli were just fantastic, so friendly and helpful. Nelson, the manager took us on a tour out of Honiara at a good price, compared to tour groups, you need to talk to him about this. The girls are simply gorgeous, nothing was too much trouble and their English was pretty good, so no problems with communications. It's a great place to feel like you are living with a Solomon Islander family and we will certainly be staying there again, price for room also very reasonable. They will also arrange to do an airport shuttle service, but this must be arranged prior.

Great place, friendly staff

We stayed for 5 nights in April 2017. The Tanuli is located on the top of the ridge, about 3kms/ 1 hour walk from Honiara. 

The Hotel is a simple, clean and friendly, with airconditioning in the room which is essential given the extreme heat and humidity. 

The major downside is the location, it's simply not walkable into town, especially at night or in rainy season, meaning a car is essential.

The "motel" is located about halfway between the airport and Honaria up on a hill to the north of the main airport to Honaria road. It is local style and locally owned but includes A/C, refrigerator, consistent hot water in the shower (not in the sink), fair free WiFi in the lobby, a ceiling fan (though mine was really noisy), and a comfortable queen sized bed (in my room at least). There was a satellite TV in the room that was not connected but the big communal TV in the lobby worked fine (but seemed to be always tuned to regional sports). You can get transport (at SI$ 10 per km - about US$1.50 in 2017 ) to about anywhere and the staff can arrange transport to specific tourist (or business) sites. The ability of the staff to communicate in English ranges from very little to fully fluent but usually someone is around that can understand what you are trying to say. It was clean and comfortable and all in all a very pleasant experience for me. The main bad news is there is no cafe and nothing within comfortable walking distance. You can use the communal kitchen but about the only thing available to cook (at least for those used to a western style diet) are eggs. There is a little shop across the road but tinned mutton and tinned fish plus the usual instant noodles and snacks were all that I could find in stock. Since I left early and came back later in the evening, I just ate out in town or got takeout food on the main road but on weekends or in bad weather, not having a nearby place that provides food could be a problem. THe Tanuli is strongly recommended for the traveler that likes being immersed in the local culture and is not fussy about food. I really enjoyed my stay (I was the only westerner but the locals were very nice and friendly) but it is not a good choice for everyone. I will be back if I return to Honaria.
