I went on my first solo vacation . I had an amazing time . Nadia , George & Julian Gumbs, owners of the Guesthouse as well as the mini super market / liquor store located underneath the guesthouse , make you feel like you are right at home. I have stayed here before in the past with my family. It’s right smack dab in the middle of Philipsburg . One minute walk to the beach and boardwalk. Surrounded by delicious local food as well as bigger restaurants . Grab a beer at the Guesthouse and have a chat with locals to see about any events or parties. Extremely helpful with how to get places and what buses to take . This place is very special to  me . It’s not fancy by any means but if you want an affordable place to sleep and be out at the beach and exploring the island everyday - this is it . 

Best Vacation I’ve ever had

SERIOUSLY?  $70/nt and you think you will get the 4 seasons?  This was satisfactorily adequate for what we needed.

I've been here and it's merely a stop over place  in P'Burgh until you get to where you are REALLY going.  Cruise ship or Orient Beach etc.  This place is really a small grocery with rooms above.  NO elevator and actually lucky to have anyone to help with bags.  The Hot water is totally dependent on solar, so timing your showers is important.  Also water is HEAVY so if you are on the 3rd floor like we were... do not expect any pressure.

We stayed 3 days and most of the shortcomings are true.  That being said,  what did you expect when paying half or less of the going rate for CHEEPO hotels there?  Maybe try the Passaggrahan next time.  They got wiped out after Maria and are going through a major rebuild as they lost one whole building.

BTW... do NOT swim straight off the beach .  Go down past Hodges pier as Bobby's Marina has no regulations regarding holding tanks!

Have a love potion #9 at the Guavaberry place on Front St. for me!

This is not a 5 star so set your expectations low.

Just a few minutes walk to front street it is at the perfect location when it comes to the beach, shopping and bus stop at the door step. This was my second stay there and it seems to need a some TLC when it comes to appearance (paint,sheets,tiles) and some of the furniture could use upgrade. This is a good hotel if you don't mind a 2 out of 5 star. Cable is terrible about 6 channels. The hot water tank was broken for 3 days they did offer to change our room for one with a separate water heater but it would have been inconvenient to repack and move. We also did not spend much time at the hotel, we were out of our room by 8am and returned at about 7-8 pm. I had to activate my cell phone data on the second night because the wifi was not working. Ask for a room as far away from the street as this is a very Noisy neighborhood. The second night a store burglar alarm went on from 9 pm till 7 am we got no sleep. The room doors are glass and it feels unsafe. I sent 2 emails to the hotel and Expedia also tried and could not contact the office to inform them we would be arriving late and did not want the small store to be closed. They never responded to myself or Expedia we were lucky to get to the small store before they closed. The small store is a market where you check in. Ok so it was a cheap room... they did offer to change it and did apologize for the inconvenience.  If it was not for the very convenient location,price of room and the bus right at the door step I would not stay again especially with my wife. If it was just me for a few days I could deal with it to stay on budget. Also I did not know we had to pay at the hotel I thought it was charged by expedia. They did take my Debit card for payment.

Second stay there and they need to step up their game...!!!!

Rooms and bathroom are dated, but everything works and is clean.  Wifi worked great, and so did the air conditioner. Good location to stay if you want to be down town Philipsburg.

Decent place to stay

I picked this for one night because I wanted something at the low $100 price point for one night. We flew in late, so I understood the registrar was not in the office, but didn't know how to find her. Room had closed jalosy windows, very few working electrical outlets, & bathroom shower did not look clean. Window AC barely cooled. When checking out, no staff available, so owner of shop downstairs said he was supposed to take our money. Who knows? Seemed shady all the way around. Be prepared to carry your luggage up two tall, narrow flights! If you have size 13 shoes, don't go here!

Booked a reservation for here. Put in the notes for the reservation that we would need a late check in (11:30 or midnight). (Never heard anything back from hotel and hotel didn't have anything in their listing stating that we had to check in before a certain time). We arrived around 11:20. The place is above a market and the market was closed. Walked up to office for the guesthouse and it was also locked up and closed. Knocked several times and waited for 20 minutes. Still no answer. Called them. No answer. Called hotels.com and they also called them. No answer. Needless to say we had to find somewhere else to stay with hotels.coms help and it took over an hour to find somewhere. So, we didn't get to our room for the night until after 1 a.m. HORRIBLE!

Not open for late check ins

First we asked for a late check in due to flight arriving at 10:00 pm. No one was there called the number no answer. Knocked on the door nothing. This place sucked no answer no coustomer service. We where stuck no motel. What a nightmare. Do not use these guys. Go with a more reputable hotel.

Didn't answer the door and office was locked up

Guesthouse located between a lot of shops in Philipsburg. Great Bay Beach is nearby. Friendly staff.

In the nineteen eighties, it was common to see the average tourist, genuinely interacting with islanders. Then came all-inclusives (and the fear and coercion inspired by ubiquitous news networks), and we all stampeded to sterile resorts. Today, if you want to plan your own vacation, wake up on your own time, manage your diet, catch a bus to Marigot, for the St. Bart's ferry, or to Maho for a beautiful walk on the beach, if you want to sample the best St. Maarten barbecue, Joshua Rose Guest House is the place for you. If you want to stay around people who look, think, and consume exactly what you do, if you want to be waited on hand and foot, only to return home without having seen the authentic St. Maarten, by public transit--then you're missing the Joshua Rose experience. I highly recommend this guest house. My children experienced the 'working man's vacation,' and the 'Back Street posse,' was extremely helpful, very friendly. As one resident insisted, "You're in St. Maarten! Never a problem."Nadia at the Joshua Rose front desk is very friendly. Please extend thanks.
