This is a very comfortable hotel run by extremely helpful and friendly staff within easy walking distance of Lumley Beach and a good Craft Market.
The food was excellent, served promptly and with a smile. Despite arriving very late after a long journey from the UK, an excellent supper was provided quickly and efficiently.
No alcohol is available at the hotel but the manager very kindly sourced some beers from a local trader for us to drink by the spotlessly clean pool.

Well situated, comfortable hotel

I've visited Freetown loads of times and stayed in quite a variety of places - Lacs, Family Kingdom, Barmoi, Number 2 beach, Marianella, Jays, 5:10.
Mariam is fine. It is generally, clean, completely secure and the staff are very friendly, helpful and trustworthy. The food is OK but nothing marvellous. The rooms are large, spartan and basic, but fridges, aircon and TVs are supplied. Internet is as intermittent as you'd expect in Freetown.
Negatives are the loud generators near the rooms, the inconsistent plumbing and the lack of a comfortable bar or terrace. A place to sit and chill with a beer would be very welcome after a hard sweaty day in the city.
On the plus side, the nearby Aberdeen turntable is a lively spot, you're close to the Pelican, it's a short walk to the beach, and as ever, the friendliness that you can encounter from people in Freetown is heartwarming - Alusine and the staff deserve recognition for their efforts.
All hotels appealing to the non-African market tend to be hugely overpriced in relation to their facilities. Mariam is no exception.
Don't expect much from this hotel and you will be rewarded.

Freetown standards apply

I stayed at Mariam's on a business trip for 10 days. The place has an overall local feeling and is run by very nice and friendly people. It is about 5 minutes walk from beautiful Lumley beach.

Not all facilities and equipment is international standard, but everything worked, although with frequent but brief interruptions in power and wifi. Rooms and facilities are clean. Some rooms are located in the interior of the building without windows to the outside, and there is a noisy generator on one side of the building, which is on during the day, but switched off in the night. There was no mosquito net in my room when I arrived, but the staff installed one, when I asked for it. 

The restaurant is a bit too small and cramped, and breakfast is basic, but the lunch and dinner menu is varied and I got very tasty food, including fresh local seafood cooked in different ways. 

All in all, great value for money at a pleasant, local place.

Friendly, local place

i stayed for a short while at the mariam about 3 years ago but this time it was for nearly a month -
 i enjoyed the stay and will return very soon .
the hotel is an honest,clean and friendly establishment . the management and staff are the best in freetwon [ and i ve tried them all ] 
nothing is too much trouble and i was made exceptionally welcome 
a good breakfast started each day and in the evening i would often enjoy grilled fish or chicken 
it is a GREAT place - safe and happy

a very pleasant 3 weeks at the mariam hotel

it was a nice hotel good service nice owner, nice room quite environment, and verry nice room service, not mention the food hardly can finish the postion of the food its verry huge i enjoy stay there for two month in 2011.  Maybe Mariam and Mohammad is groing up now.
