Hotel Vranje

Had a wonderful stay at this hotel. The location is quite central and convenient. The staff is friendly and polite. Essentially is a no frills hotel ideally suited for a family or solo traveler alike.

Amazing Property

Old hotel in the heart of the city. Too bad it was not renovated since it had been built in socialist times. When you step in main hall, you get a feeling there is too much empty space. Rooms are equipped with old furniture and there is nothing nice in there. They are not terrible, but they are just rooms where you want to sleep until morning and then quickly get out. Restaurant is in the same state. Price for this place is not as low as it should be.

This hotel has seen better times

If you fancy going back in time, say, 40 years to the golden age of socialism and if you are a masochist then do go to this hotel. 
In all my 30 years of travelling and working in Eastern Europe I have not come across a hotel like this. Although Serbia has been suffering under a big economic depression due to the war period, there are simply no excuses for running a hotel this way. 
The reception lady tried to speak some English, but I had to switch to my limited knowledge of Serbian to make clear what we wanted (room / breakfast). 
The cramped room had not been updated since at least 40 years, the bathroom was dirty, the toilet was about to fell apart. At least the night was quiet, I estimate the total number of guests about 5.
The restaurant is not inviting at all, the smoking lady inside was not the kind of person you'd like to deal with. Better cross the street and get some good Serbian fare at the Hobbit cave-like restaurant.
Breakfast (included in the inflated room price of 46 Euros) is a meagre affair, some things made with eggs and ham (not really ham but a kind of unidentifyable meat product). 
When we left the breakfast table we were kindly asked to pay for the coffee. It turned out that this was not included. When we paid our 700 dinars (about 6 Euros) the waiter pocketed the money without a smile and also without some receipt. 
There is another hotel in Vranje and also Motel Vranje on the highway (did not look good to me), so try one of those before entering this hell hole.

Worst hotel in the Balkans ? ZERO points !

There is no point in beating around the bush, this is was the worst hotel I have stayed in (particularly in terms of value for money). That made it interesting in itself I suppose. First and major bad point is that there is a very loud disco right across from it, yes, even in the middle of the week, playing until around 3am. The hotel manager saw we were travelling with an infant, and still put us on the side of the hotel facing the disco, despite us being one of I think two or three occupants in a hotel that could hold hundreds... Run-down is a compliment. The balcony was out of bounds as it was locked, but that was ok, as it was decorated throughout with bird feces. The bathroom, from what we could see of it with the 10w bulb, should be of particular interest to archaeologists, but being an archaeologist myself, it still didn't work for me. The bath was filthy, there were hints of chrome on the taps, which let out a trickle. The complementary shampoo was quite cool though, called something like "hot kiss" with a big pair of lips emblazoned on it. The toilet was clean. See, there is something positive I can say. Oh, but there was no toilet paper, there was a clump of green paper hand towels that if you were John Wayne enough to use, would have immediately blocked the toilet. The bed had mismatched coloured linen that you would expect if staying with an undergraduate relative after a hard weekend partying (them, not you). The ex-soviet TV volume only went up (not joking), and the refrigerator did not refrigerate, but did make an odd noise. The AC worked (positive point number 2). The breakfast was stunning. No really. OK, it was awful. You had the choice of an omelette with chesse OR ham, I got growled at for asking for both. You also had a choice of yogurt or tea, not coffee. Oh no, that was an extra charge in a country that in morning time is pretty much fueled by Serbian / Turkish coffee. The elevator worked, except for the time the door wouldn't open and we were then sent to every floor before ours. Other than that it was fine... except for the graffiti and the fact it was bright red. 

Finally, on to the service. The breakfast guy nearly smiled once, but I think he got a painful twitch in his face so he growled instead. Despite having sufficient Serbian to organise to pay the bill, the woman at reception never made eye contact or spoke to me. Except to snarl "PIN" for the credit card. So we parted ways without a further word, and one of the more eventful and in hindsight humerous hotel visits came to an end. Think Fawlty Towers manned by James Bond villains, but less well maintained :)

Noteworthy in that there is nothing positive to say at all...

A typical rundown Sovjet-style hotel. The room itself is not too bad bur the bathroom should have been replaced 50 years ago. Complete lack of maintenance.
But, the worst thing ; there is a extremely loud discotheque outside which prevents you from sleeping ,
