Sobo Bade

One of the most absurdly beautiful places we have ever been ! Unspoilt beaches , friendly staff , cool cats , chilled vibes . Lovely food .  Will be coming back for sure rooms were clean , linen clean , staff on hand if anything needed.

I prefer hotels to resorts, but Sobo Bade cured me of that pretty quickly with its quirky tower of a room with a view to the sea, wonderful restaurant with its warm accommodating staff, and Gaudi-esque mosaic studded architectural details everywhere. The beach is stunning; you can either walk it, hunker down on it, or look at it from a variety of terraces. The sprawling complex spills into a friendly village where goats parade and people help you find what you need in the shops. My first reaction to the place was that it was kind of precious and yoga retreaty but no, people come from all over, including Africa, and everyone seemed grateful to be there. In typical Senegalese fashion the staff left you alone unless you had a specific request. I'd go back there in a second.

This is a beautiful, interesting place to stay. The proprietor has built a unique work of art where people gather to make art and talk about humanity. The beach is beautiful whether you're standing on it, swimming just off of it, or looking at it from the Sobo Bade terraces. The rooms are clean and small, some darker, some lighter, some with a/c, some without. Beds are comfortable and clean. All rooms are incense-scented and have nets, but with the ocean breeze, bugs are at a minimum. Friendly beach dogs. A restaurant where people make delicious food (including sesame ice cream). Water is precious as the area is served by a well, so you'll have to use it wisely. Artisans on site do good work. Talk with the musicians and learn. It's a wonderful place

Quirky place for sure, but has character and the staff are nice and helpful.

Location on the beach amazing.
Cool african drumming sessions some evenings.
Rooms are rustic/basic, but nice.   Views from the upper rooms over the beach are amazing.
Wifi is off/on but you get by.

I enjoyed my stay in Sobo Bade.  

I chose this hotel based on it's proximity to the Airport and it's beachfront location.   It didn't disappoint. 

It's artsy and quirky in a beautiful location. 

The rooms are on the smallish side, but the outdoors and public areas make up for that.

The dining ate is also very nice, and the food is good.

Beautiful and wonderful

The design of this place is Gaudi-esque. The rooms by the water above the beach are divine. But. No hot shower or bath. That was a big turnoff for me especially when so many of the roads are dusty dirt roads. 

Also, there is almost no internet. There are no sites close to the hotel. And the area is wretched. The beach is littered with garbage and no one from the hotel bothers to pick any of it up. I lugged 4 car tires up the stairs and dumped them. I'm guessing they'll be back. 

The people are very friendly staff are wonderfully accommodating. The Muslims are ruining beyond the hotel. All they care about is roping in other suckers and collecting the money. 

The food is good. Prices fairly good. The place is getting rundown but is still a wow when seeing it for the first time. But In 20 years because of erosion, this hotel and other building will tumble into the ocean. The locals have no idea about what is to come, carelessly building right on the beach embankments. Architecture? What architecture? The hotel is the best thing in the area. 

And good luck getting to some of the sites. It is nightmarish to travel on the roads... ie: dirt.

My person review of the hotel which might make you think again. Might.

Sobo Bade is truly unique accommodation – its like staying in an art gallery, mini market and performance theatre all rolled together. The walls are dotted with paintings, courtyard with stalls featuring local cultural wares and artists performing at night.
Sea views and sunset is stunning as this place is perched on the hill, and is and beach is of course easily accessible. 
We had the room at the back, and above the music performance so if you are a light sleeper, avoid this building. 
The restaurant service needs some attention though.
We had late lunch at 3pm, but even then we waited 1 hour for seafood salad lunch and drinks to be served.  The smoked fish was missing in the salad. When we enquired with the waiter, he said he didn’t know why and didn’t even bother to enquire with the kitchen. Not the kind of answer we had expected.
For dinner, we waited 20 minutes to be served as they assign 1 waiter to take the order.  After the order, we had to wait 1 hour 30 minutes for the chicken and fish to be served. And the waiter brought the wrong bill to us during our wait and wrong food from another table. Clearly the staff seem confused. No apology given.
We decided to place our order earlier the next day for breakfast at 7.30am as we had to leave by 8.45am.  Our order of 2 cooked eggs, bread, coffee and tea took 1 hour again. And there were only few tables occupied at this time.
We do not expect Tier 1 speed of service but to have to wait over 1 hour wait for 3 meals is certainly not a pleasant experience, especially when the rest of our dining in other local eateries were not as slow as this.

Lovely Accommodation, Painfully slow restaurant service

Sobo Bade is lovely and the work they do there is terrific, but it right next to a mosque and The Call To Prayer is broadcast from 2, 12" horn speakers starting  at 6am every day, so if you're not an early riser it could be problematic.  Also, hot water for your shower has to be requested, and then it is delivered in a bucket. My room was small and poorly lit, because it relied on solar for electricity, and solar wasn't enough. Oh, and the toilet leaked, but, het, at least there was a toilet!
Like I said, it was lovely, but there were so things to adapt to...

Like Living in an unfinished work of art

Luckily I spent only one night there, closer place to airport.
My room was very small e super hot, the fan didn't help much.
No hot water,no soap, smelly toilet, mosquito nets with very big holes, worn out linen, no privacy.
I had dinner at their restaurant, not bad, but definitely the worst meal in Senegal.
On top of that, a disco nearby played loud music at least until 4am, when I left.
The good point was the position on the cliff, right in front of the ocean, where you can finds lots of benches and chairs.

The decor of the hotel is very interesting and artsy and the view overlooking the ocean is beautiful however that's where the niceties end. Our biggest issue with the hotel was the bed bug infestation. 3 members of our group woke up with numerous bed bug bites. We reported this to the management who at first claimed that they were mosquito bites and then offered to just change the sheets. We turned down the new sheets and requested new rooms. Later that night bed bugs were spotted in one of the new rooms so we tripled up in a different room for the night. When we reported this to the manager, he laughed.  Along with bed bugs, the service at the on site restaurant is inordinately slow. We ordered spaghetti for dinner and the meal took almost a hour and a half to arrive. The restaurants down on the beach front provide more timely service.
