booked the private room. tiny as a cell,the window is at the ceilling and once you opened it a bit you could not close. no one at the reception to find out things.the all hostel is narrow and claustofobic.the kitchen is tiny . maybe if you are under 25 and on very low budjet it may work

Retro Youth Hostel is a nice classic hostel on a nice location in Cluj. The people were very easy going, sweet and helpful. The hostel was very clean and fancy. The beds where nice and the rooms as well. This is a good recommendation in Cluj!

Good hostel

This place is the best. The staff are so so lovely, relaxed and kind. As a first time traveller this place feels like a safe haven. 

After having a horrible stay at a bed and breakfast this place this was where I escaped too. 

The location is great, on a quiet backstreet but a 1 min walk from the hustle and bustle of Old Town. Lovely restaurants nearby. 

The rooms are clean and have a nice feeling, simple yet homely. 

There's a place to store luggage if you arrive before you can check in and two kitchens that help make neither one too hectic. 

When I am in Cluj again this will be the place I will come back to. 

Only other point is if you are here on a Friday or Saturday evening make sure you have earplugs as the noise from the bars can sometimes be quite loud. 
But then I would say earplugs are needed for any hostel you go to, it would be silly to expect absolute silence at any place.

The best place to stay

This hostel has everything you need - a great location near the centre but also in a quiet spot; nice warm comfy rooms and beds, helpful staff, good kitchen facilities, a sauna, a lounge area. It is cosy and clean and I would be happy to go back again.

I stayed about 10 days. I can't speak highly enough about the kindness and helpfulness of the staff. I was lucky enough to enjoy great conversations with most of them. I was also impressed by the cleanliness. 

First I was in a 4-bed slope-ceiling dorm with 2 lockers, then in a private room with a shared hallway bathroom, then in a 3-bed dorm with a shared hallway bathroom and about 6-8 hallway lockers. Each room provided a comfortable bed. I think everyone who needs a locker would have one. What's missing here though, like many hostels, are places to hang your towel, hang or place clothing, put your ditty bag, etc. Wall hooks are definitely doable here. I hope the management will consider it. Hostels that tend to host large school groups for single overnights tend not to realize this much, but this hostel hosts a good mix or groups and individuals. (The lack of places to put stuff within the room and the lack of a soap dish in the 4-bed dorm shower lower my score from 5 to 4 stars.) 

There are 2 kitchen areas for cooking and sitting. Cook-tops, microwave, tea kettle, good size refrigerators with freezers. Not the best pot/pan/silverware selection I've seen. Good dishes and bowls though. 

The location is terrific! It's very close to Unirii, the central square. There are plenty of places to eat nearby. Ask the staff; they make good recommendations. There's also a supermarket off Unirii. 

From what I know of the other hostels in the city, I think this is the best choice, bringing my score back to 5 stars.

Kind 24-hour staff, clean

Retro Hostel has a good location close to the old town of Cluj-Napoca, next to the old city walls. The hostel itself is in a rather quiet street. It is easily accessible by public transport (you can take the tram or bus from the railway station). It is only a five minute walk to the city’s main square. The room in which I stayed (single room) was clean and good. Toilets and showers are decent, even though they are a bit dated. In the hostel, there is an informal and relaxed atmosphere. The staff are friendly and helpful and speak multiple languages. They are willing to answer many questions and can help with things such as information about the area, taxi transfers to the airport, information about excursions et cetera. What is more, they are even willing to help you despite being injured! I booked an excursion (dependent on the number of participants) to the Apuseni mountains, including Scarisoara’s ice cave and the Turda Gorge, amongst others), which was excellent and included many different aspects (culture, nature, geology etcetera). The tour guide and driver knew a lot about Cluj-Napoca, and the surrounding areas, such as the Apuseni mountains. They speak fluent and decent English and can answer many questions. A plus was that the tour starts immediately in front of the hostel entrance. Moreover, the hostel also offers services such as a sauna, computers, wi-fi, luggage storage and laundry. I was glad I booked in advance, because at one point all the rooms were booked, due to the Electric Castle festival which takes place near Cluj-Napoca in summer. The price-quality ratio was decent. Therefore, overall a positive experience. Would recommend.

Great choice for a stay in Cluj-Napoca

Staff super helpful. I stayed one night, then went travelling for a week and returned for another two night stay. They were very accommodating for my initial 2am arrival and were able to fit me in on my second stay when I had only wanted to book the night beforehand. Excellent location also with lovely restaurants on laneways nearby. Only thing was it is difficult to reach directly to front door by car - would recommend walking the last 30m from other side street.

Lovely staff

We spent two nights in Retro Hostel in Cluj, the location in a quiet street in the city center near everything. The breakfasts are included and good stuff. The rooms are clean and comfortable and the shared WC are clean all the time. They allow us two store our bikes in the corridor and the staff was very attentive and helpful with everything.

Super nice staff, good location and economic.

We had our own room, without a bathroom. And it was just fine. Bathroom renovation is needed in the 1st floor and that's the only remark we have. Rather than that: cosy, in center, nice people, nice everything. I recomend to all nice none-demanding people.

Great stay

Only problem is that because it’s so popular it can be booked up (especially over the weekends). I really enjoyed my time here - clean, safe and friendly. Excellent location just off the main square!!!
