Was kind of winging it on a whirlwind trip, and the owner of the hostel I was at in San Juan recommended this one if I went out to Culebra.  Very low key. Nice staff. Very quiet and clean dorm. Beautiful sunset at the beach around the hill behind the hostel. I walked there from the airport. (I recommend the island-hopper plane from the Old SanJuan airport. Fast and a neat experience) If you arrive by ferry, it's just across the canal from it - you just have to walk through town to the bridge over the canal then walk back west on that side. Any advice Nancy gives is golden - whether where to eat what meal of the day, or what beach or trail to go to depending on what you're looking for.

The hostel is run by Nancy and a group of wonderful people. It’s a little bit hard to find the first time. Bunkbeds and very friendly guest and host. Get a map of Collabra when you get off the ferry or the airplane. Then stroll around town schedule snorkelingOr a dive trip. Came over not knowing what was on the island and have stayed for several days.Price is $30 per day per person several rooms Nancy has been fabulous

You have to walk through town to get to the location... but it isnt bad as the town is pretty tiny.  This was my second experience with a Caribbean hostel set up (i was use to European hostels).  The place is simple.  No frills.  It is not fancy by any means.  It is simply a place to lay your head.  The house is a bit run down and the bathroom is very, very basic (we were in the basement co-ed space).  It served our purposes and we felt safe there.

Nancy is a font of good advice, and it's a peaceful place to sleep, too.

Relax on the cheap

Ok... nothing fancy

This is a good, basic, no frills hostel. My group of 5 were the only people there, so we had the room to ourselves. The shower didn’t have hot water, but we didn’t want that anyway. There was air conditioning, but ours went out halfway through the night. Upon realizing this, the hostess apologized and said that we could have asked for a remote to control it. The hostess was incredibly friendly, helpful, and even offered to make us coffee the next morning since she didn’t expect any more guests. It’s a little pricey as far as hostels in general go, but a good price for what you’ll find on the rest of the island. There is a small, but well-stocked, colmado (store/bodega) less than 2 minutes from the hostel. Further, it is an easy walk to the hostel from the ferry and buses to Playa Flamenco are in the area often. 

Simple, nothing fancy

Phone number listed not in service. Email was how I made a reservation, the initial girl was very responsive. But when I tried to confirm and ask another question, nobody wrote back after 2-3 attempts. Upon arriving, no one was there to greet us. Apparently, the owner was away and the folks left in charge were filling in the role temporarily. They were really nice once we met them, but we were kind of wandering around unsure what to do until then. Checking in was easy and we were warned the power goes in and out, but there was no other room to put us in so we had to deal. Ultimately, I had to shower in pitch black darkness using a cell phone's last energy as a flashlight (couldn't charge phone either) which was less than ideal. I'm a flexible person, but I don't think the accommodations were worth what we paid. Cold water showers - which were expected given other people's review comments.

Pros: friendly hostellers, cats and chickens galore, walking up the property hill gives spectacular views, walking down 2 min to the beach also amazing, usual common laws for hostelling (sharing, safety, etc), clean sheets/towels, only hostel on the island, wifi not bad

Cons: confused roosters cockadoodling at 2am, private room with no windows in bathroom and tiny quarter of a window for minimal light (cannot open bc of air conditioner), no power (not necessarily their fault given the lack of resources to help aide PR)

Ultimately, could have been average at 3 stars if the owner/reception was more responsive via email and there was electricity. I so wish I could have given this place a better review. Still would recommend to other hostellers as it was the only one on the island.
