The central region of Portugal has a lot of historic villages that deserve a visit. One of these is Trancoso, a medieval village well preserved and surrounded by ramparts, which played an important role in the struggles that Portugal fought over the centuries to assert its independence from Spain. Near Douro River and its wonderful landscapes, the region offers authenticity, good food and the unbeatable hospitality of its inhabitants. A very nice and cosy place to stay during your visit is Solar dos Almeidas, an old noble house that has been lovingly restored by its owners, a nice couple in their golden age, who pay all the attention to their guests needs, with lots of sympathy. Breafkfast is superb, the property has a nice swimimg pool to got sunshine in the glorious mornings and its location allows easy and pleasant trips to Trancoso and other villages, like Almeida, Castelo Rodrigo, Linhares, Lamego... I have enjoyed a couple of days at Solar dos Almeidas this summer and I am sure I will return.
