Vila Holanda Bed & Breakfast

We arrived at Vila Holanda after a short ferry ride from Faial. Matt was watching for us and directed us to the parking area, just down the hill from our room. We were instantly wowed by the views! The porch and windows on one side of our bungalow looked out over the island of Sao Jorge and behind us was Pico mountain. Often shrouded with clouds, the summit was in clear view the day we arrived and several days thereafter. Away from the ferry port village of Madelena, Vila Holanda is peaceful yet accessible to everything on the island. Inside, we found the layout of the room was excellent. A comfortable queen bed, bunk beds perfect for children, a dining table with two chairs, mini fridge, tea kettle with an assortment of teas and instant coffee and a large closet completed the room. The bathroom was average size for Europe with plenty of storage. Water pressure in the shower was excellent as was the hot temperature of the water. Everything was spotlessly clean, the room giving off a slight fragrance of the wood ceiling. Matt designed and built the bungalow himself. Quite an accomplishment! Outside was a deck with chaise lounges to relax on and watch the sunset, as well a picnic table for lunch or a take-away dinner. Unfortunately we were so busy sightseeing and hiking around this delightful island that we did not have an opportunity to take advantage of these views. We’ll have to slow down more on our next visit! While breakfast was typical of the Azores, Matt made an effort to supply a variety of meats, cheeses, breads, yogurts, boiled egg, coffee, tea and juice. So much food that we often made up ham and cheese sandwiches to take for our daily excursions so we could hike wherever and whenever we wanted. He was also readily available to make recommendations for sights and restaurants. Thank you, Matt, for a thoroughly enjoyable stay on Pico.
