Casa de Juste - Lousada

The location is beautiful, an old house surrounded by nature. It is very quiet&peaceful, and the owners are super friendly and nice.

We just completed a delightful cooking school experience with Ana...and grand tour of the Juste estate with Fernando. Their hospitality was genuine and they made us feel right at home in their kitchen. 
We highly recommend this experience to anyone who loves and appreciates preparing traditional meals in the Douro Valley...and the pleasure of enjoying a meal and more importantly conversation with Ana and Fernando.

Our very first trip to Portugal as a family took us to Casa de Juste. A beautiful situated property close to the town of Lousada, which to be honest was not very exciting and possibly only worth a quick trip to take in Aldi's. There is another 'supermarket' there to stick to Aldi's.There are other "supermarkets" closer but they are much smaller, more you corner shop. The 'Villa' was what i would class as 'Rustic Grandeur', as already pointed out by previous reviews, this villa reflects Portugal living and not you ultra modern villas. Everything you need is available and you only have to ask if you can't find it. 

Ana & Fernando went out of their way to be helpful. My only cripe is that we did not ask them enough about what to see in the area. we had a wasted trip to Braga but had a lovely visit to Guimaraes which has lots of character with loads to see and do.

Casa de Juste sits right in the right location for visiting the north of Portugal, a car is essential for this as stated in the info given about the villa.

As very peaceful place, caught up on loads of sleep.

We wanted to get a feel of historic Portugal rather than staying in a standard modern hotel and Casa de Juste proved to be perfect! Anna and Fernando the hosts made us so welcome. Their hospitality was wonderful. Fernando waited up for us to arrive until gone 1 in the morning as our flight was delayed, with perfect good humour. Breakfast in their lovely courtyard was a delight, (freshly made waffles and the vineyards own fruit juices were wonderful!) To cap it all we managed to leave a wallet there which they kindly sent back to the UK for us. Perfect hosts!

We spent a week in The Old Granary - a four bedroom property with its own swimming pool - and absolutely loved it ! It is so peaceful and the scenery is beautiful. The Granary itself is fairly basic but spotlessly clean and each of the four bedrooms has its own ensuite. The kitchen, is again basic but had everything we needed and plenty of crockery, cutlery, utensils etc. The highlight for us however was the incredible hospitality of the owners, Ana and Fernando who could not have been more welcoming or accommodating. We had a couple of evening meals and although there was not a menu as such, they took so much trouble to provide a meal that we would enjoy as a whole family - which we certainly did. We also had the wine which came from the estate with our meals which was really good ! All in all a great week in a lovely location, with great hosts. We would love to go back !

A real gem!

Week in Casa de Juste Villa

Wonderful hospitality

Beautiful location & fantastic hospitality

We stayed here for a few nights recently, and whilst the house and grounds are beautiful, we were made to feel as if we were intruding, the whole time.

Upon arrival, we went around the wrong side of the house (no signage at all), and ended up walking into their private space. The owner was annoyed, but as there were no staff or signs, we had no clue where to go. Not the best start.

Once at reception, the owner showed us to our room. Very pleasant - a little old and worn, but to be expected when one stays in an old place like this. She failed to explain the honesty bar, for drinks - it was only 2 days later, that I asked one of the staff if it was possible to buy a beer, that they looked shocked and explained it to me. As we were 2 of only 4 guests, I expected better service. But, they were too busy putting themselves first.

The pool area and grounds are lovely, but as the owner’s children and grandchildren were there, it was like a zoo, with children screaming and fighting and splashing. Not quite the relaxing haven they advertised. I expect this at a family resort, but not somewhere like this. Especially as none of the guests had children.

The food is fantastic – much of the produce is from the farm itself (wine, fruit, vegetables, eggs, etc).  It was a shame that they only let us eat there, on one night out of four. The rest of the time, the owner just shrugged and said it was not possible.  

A shame really, as the place is great. If they put paying customers ahead of their own family, it could be wonderful. As it was, we were made to feel like we were inconveniencing them.

I won’t go back.

Beautiful home...for their family, not paying guests

We stayed in the separate house on a self catering basis. I split this review into two parts. The first part being outside the house was what we expected. The pool was in a lovely location overlooking some vines and the lounge chairs were comfortable with the necessary shade umbellas. There were tables and chairs for the patio and lawn with the former in the shade. Wifi access was available near the main house, access to which was along a vine covered walkway.
The inside of the house however was poor. The kitchen was in urgent need of updating. Cutlery, china and cooking utensils all needed replacing. Nothing was provided in the kitchen. No cleaning materials, salt and pepper etc, not even matches to light the gas cooker (the nearest shop is a drive away). I paid a 4* - 5* price but got a house of 1* - 2* standard. The rooms are dark, power points loose, holes in the walls/ceilings and the list could go on. Very disappointing. I made the booking through Distinctive Portugal whose website on this property is described through rose tinted glasses. When trying to resolve the issues above the agent would not talk me only to the owners. The owners did try their best to resolve my complaint and we did come to a compromise. I now know booking the house is cheaper through the owners website than through Distinctive Portugal (villa 309).
To end on a happier note the owners own rose wine was excellent.
