We stayed at this hotel twice and have booked it again. It’s a budget-friendly place in the very centre of Funchal. It has everything we need really - the rooms are spacious, there’s always hot water in the shower, the rooms are cleaned every day. Faultless, fast WiFi (crucial if you are working remotely or travelling with a teen). Massive kudos to the amazing staff - they are very friendly and courteous. The location is perfect for sightseeing in Funchal or getting to other places in Madeira.

For us it’s perfect!

Tiny hot room. Broken telephone, broken air conditioner. Stuffy and airless. Broken sink. 
Broken chair and broken bathroom ceiling!

Rubbish. The staff when they are here are polite and try to help but place is an utter dump. We complained and were moved to an even smaller room which was so small you had to kneel to shower. 

Finally got a tiny room with functional air con and a shower that a midget can stand in. 
No double bed just two singles.
Don’t stay here. It’s clean but broken

Just don’t!

We got a so-called flat 20m2 no table a double bed 120 we're the matras is smaller than the bed length 180. Forget about being comfy with 2 people. Then the noise from the neighbours who nicely literally banged on our door before 10 a for who knows what. No airco no fannothing except mosquitos. Kitchen nothing to cook and the tab stream lands outside the sink. So cet beside door sowhen u open the main door u destroy what is plugged in. Bathroom clean but very small and very old. I real scam. 46 euros for no sleep noise no space and really primitive bath. At level of the what is called in France "marchand de sommeil"  and thé smell of the place like was not open for years. To be avoided. 

46 euro NOT WORTH IT

This is budget accommodation that is very clean and well maintained. The cleaning is done daily and is thorough. Reception staff were hugely supportive of me when I had a difficulty. I slept very well and there was no noise nuisance. The area is a busy one with lots of bars and restaurants and a very lively ambience.

Enormously helpful and friendly staff.

On the downside, this hotel is very basic. The rooms have no tea/coffee making facilities or fridge. The en-suite is tiny and, in our room anyway (24) the TV didn't work and wasn't rectified even though we reported it twice. Sound-proofing is poor, so you may be kept awake by your neighbours or by the noisy bars and games room over the road. There is no car-park and parking your hire car anywhere near is a bit of a nightmare.
On the plus-side, the location in downtown Funchal is ideal to visit the vibrant Madeira capital. You're just 300 metres from the major shopping centre and maybe 500 metres from the seafront. Although very basic, the rooms are kept very clean and are serviced daily. The balcony is a nice spot to finish your day, sipping some Madeira seco wine and some local butter cookies. The continental breakfast is a bit limited but adequate and is served on a picturesque terrace on the 5th floor (watch out for the cheeky pigeons though, who even land on your table!).  WIFI was very good - ample for me to stream the England v New Zealand rugby on my iPad (brilliant result!) and the staff were always friendly and helpful - notably getting assistance within 15 minutes when our hire car suffered a puncture.
The bottom line is that the Residencial Colombo is great value for money.
Unless you demand 4 or 5 star luxury during your stay, this is a simple, honest budget hotel which is worth considering.

Very basic but clean and well-located

Very basic apartment accommodation. Wi Fi almost non existent and not worth logging into. Nice setting for continental breakfast on terrace but pestered by pigeons. Noise travels though out building. I was on side street away from main hotel. Good location is about the only positive thing about the place. 

Very basic 

Building needs to be entirely rebuilt. There is no isolation whatsoever: your sleep will be disturbed by street noise and neighbours' as well. No gluten-free breakfast available. On positive side, the terrace for breakfast on the top floor, but we careful with food-stealing pigeons

Very noisy and decrepit building; avoid

Although this hotel is cheap it is very clean and the staff are helpful and friendly. A small kitchen in each room and balcony in many this is our 4th time here and we will be back, that says it all. Perfect for a traveler on a budget.

Clean and friendly

Good and central with good clean rooms. Basic but good value for money and the staff were very polite, spoke good English and gave good advice and service. Breakfast was not included but can be pre booked or is available if you forget to book it  for about 5 Euros for a continental breakfast.  We used the Bakery and restaurant three doors down (PRDARIA PASTELARIA) which also serves excellent food at  lunch time and evening meals at a fair price (ask for Miguel). The restaurant next door was very quite so it was only at the end of our stay that we tried it out. To our surprise the food was good and service by the owner and his wife (the chef) was excellent so why it was so quite is a mystery.
Hotel is very close to shops and a short walk to the ocean and city centre. If you have a hire car there are very few Disabled bays (I found three in the week I was there) the best and cheapest parking was in the municipal multi-story just two roads away. You drive past the hotel take the second left, go to the far end of the road (you can see the car park opposite you) and turn right up to the roundabout double back on yourself and it is on your right, it was 4 Euros for 24 hours or part thereof.

Most restaurants close to the hotel and in the centre are what I find to be expensive on my budget more expensive than the UK. Shop about and you find good prices. 
Go to the tourist information on the main thoroughfare where you can get guide books and maps for free.

Good and central with good clean rooms

We booked this place after our original accommodation had fallen through. While it is central the reception- which is grotty and run down looking, is in a separate building to the actual accommodation. The room was ok, very small which in itself wasnt a problem. The problem was with the noise all night from something outside in the alleyway which sounded like an air conditioning unit/ motor running. This made it impossible to get a nights sleep. Would not stay here again.
