I booked through booking.com.  should have read the reviews better. Tried to communicate more than once that I needed a shuttle from the airport as that was in the amenities.  No response, and when I asked him... he "doesn't have time to respond".   I'm sure I didn't get the room I should have.  The internet is TERRIBLE.  BEWARE.  and I'm stuck with 10 nights.  😥

Disappointing

The weekend before my arrival date I was shocked receive an email demanding I pay in  full by bank transfer by 1300hrs that day or my booking would be cancelled.  This was at best an utterly contemptus way to treat a customer, or a thinly disguised scam,As the banks would be conveniently closed and the owner could  presumeably charge the full amount  as a cancellation fee and re let the room doubling  his income.

Dont book this is a scam

We reserved a large 3 bed room with balcony for 5 nights on booking.com, and upon arriving were shown to a tiny 2 bed room with only a small window, directly next to the busy communal bathroom. When I questioned the change (equipped with my clear reservation paper), he insisted that this was the room we reserved, AND that we should pay the exact fee, despite the obvious downgrade.  As it was busy Christmas holidays, we had no choice to pay and stay or be without lodging altogether.  The room was damp and tiny, with one broken chair, a basic desk, terrible lighting, a VERY dirty towel, and only room for one person to get ready at a time, while the other sat on the bed. There's only one key, and no lobby to leave it for the other.  Neither the room nor the communal bathroom was cleaned in the entire time we stayed there.  Stay here only if you must--but bring your own sleeping bag, towel, cleaning supplies,  a sense of humor...and get a receipt!   I always stay in small budget hotels and typically like them...but between the dishonesty and the downgrade, this one really was one of the worst ever. There are better budget places to be found in Funchal...support businesses that value their customers and treat them better than this man does.

I booked one night at this place and paid in advance through booking. 
When I have arrived there, the owner wanted me to pay again in cash saying that he would refund whatever I have paid by credit card later on. He was anything but nice and was quite rude with us. He also didn't have a room for us at that address where we had booked and wanted to send us to another bulding. Plus wanted to charge us extra 10€ for checking in after 11pm. We tried to find common ground with him but his english and portuguese limited skills and agressive attitude made us leave the hostel with no refund. 

The "hostel" is in the 4th floor of an old building without elevator which made it difficult do carry the bags. Besides there was no sign at the building entrance with the name of the hostel whatsoever. 

It is sad to see that these type of businesses are running and giving a bad image to the local tourism by treating customers like numbers.

Don't trust all ratings you see on booking, unless you don't care about how you are treated as long as its cheap.

Lesson learned for me.
