Hotel Odr

This rating is for a one star hotel. It's one of the strangest hotels I've ever stayed in. It so happened we were visiting friends in Sulechow and this was the cheapest place we could find and cheap it was. From the outside it looks like a normal hotel, but once inside it looks like it once was a sanatorium or boarding school. The entrance is cavernous and sound carries even when one whispers. The lady at the front desk was super friendly and spoke decent English. She asked what on earth we were doing here in Kalsk. On checking in we asked about breakfast. She looked doubtfully and finally asked what time and whether we wanted regular coffee or instant and eggs or sausages and what kind of bread. We put in our order which included eggs as well as sausages. We had booked for 2 nights. Our rooms looked like dormitory rooms. Single beds, a chair and a table and luckily a shower and towels as well as soap and toilet paper. We had brought our own shampoo. We came prepared. Mattresses dated back to the DDR with springs jutting through. Apparently we were lucky as further down the hallway were facilities with shower cabins and toilets, indicating that not all rooms were as luxurious as ours. Not only the mattresses kept us awake, but also a school bus full with youngsters hanging out in the hallway part of the night. They must have left early in the morning as we didn't see them. Breakfast was in a different building. Actually it was a buffet with all the trimmings one would expect, including a big jar with peanut butter and a terrine with sausages. No eggs. The real coffee we had to order through an opening leading to the kitchen. The "kitchen lady" was grumpy and spoke only Polish. Half the cup was drags, so we opted for the instant coffee. Next night/day same thing. Again a bus with schoolchildren. First or second graders this time. Teachers were perturbed when we complained about the noise. Apparently "quiet time" hadn't started yet. Again no eggs for breakfast. Both times we shared the large dining room with one other single guest (we assumed). I know this sounds like I am complaining, but I am not. We got what we paid for. We were just not prepared. If budget is an issue this hotel will work for you. As far as Eastern European 1 star hotels are concerned this hotel was actually very good. I liked their brochure. Maybe there's more to the hotel, but we didn't see it or look for it.
