Calling this a "lodge" somewhat gives a wrong impression, as it is in very little grounds, in a suburban environment. There is little to do in the lodge and going outside is not to be encouraged, except on organised trips. That said, it is a pleasant place to stay, albeit rather basic. The staff are friendly and helpful. The bed was reasonably comfortable and the room suited its purpose. One problem was the noise generated by early risers, amplified by the wooden structure of the rooms. The food was fairly bland but well cooked and perfectly edible. There was wine and beer available at reasonable cost. The wi-fi did function but was unpredictable.

A good base

We recently spent several nights in the Rain Tree Lodge and were very impressed with Konio and her team!  She and Ivan (the Lodge driver) picked us up punctually at the airport despite our flight being delayed.  Our luggage was lost and Konio went above and beyond to help us coordinate with the airport and also to go pick up our bags when they arrived.  For this, we can not thank her enough!  We found the rooms to be  clean and well equipped.  Air conditioning worked well.   Bathroom is spacious.  We only had cold water from the shower but that was okay because the temperatures outside were very warm.  Konio assisted us in planning our outings and put us in touch with a reliable and knowledgeable taxi      driver.   We had both breakfast and dinner at the lodge and the meals were good.  We felt safe and would recommend the Rain Tree Lodge to anyone looking for an alternative to the bigger more corporate Port Moresby hotels.   A big thank you again to Konio for being such a kind and helpful host!  We hope to see you again.

Super Helpful City Hideaway

We stayed here for one night prior to setting off on a trip along the Sepik River (amazing!). I had been unable to pay for the room in advance, but had been assured by Geraldin that there was no problem, and, indeed, that was the case. We were picked up at the airport by the hotel's free transport and then rapidly checked in.Lovely place. We were a bit suprised that we had to order our dinner and breakfast menu in advance, but later found this is standard in PNG. The staff were all lovely and, when we realised that we had mistakenly not made a reservation for the night after we returned from out Sepik trip, they happily phoned round other hotels and found a room for us. They looked after our big cases while we were away, picked us up at the airport on our return, and organised for us to be taken to the new hotel. Above and beyond!

So friendly and helpful

all in all a pleasant stay.  i took a taxi back at night who said he knew where it was. but he didn't. nor did i, took over an hour.  i will be back next year - breakfast was nice but they'd run out of hash browns!

lovely place

I stayed at Raintree Lodge at the beginning and the end of a birding trip to PNG.  While I traveled there on my own, I joined a group of birders for the rest of the visit.  The lodge itself is small and lovely, making the most of its inner courtyard with many trees, plants and places to sit and enjoy (if you're okay with sitting out in a warm and humid climate.)  If you prefer air conditioning, it's available in the rooms, along with creature comforts not always available in PNG (ie, electricity, wifi and hot water).  I stayed in a downstairs room first and later in an upstairs room at the end of the trip. Except for the stairs (no elevator), I didn't notice a great difference between them - comfortable bed, charming decor & a big walk-in shower in both.  I wasn't bothered by any outside noises, but some of the other guests did mention hearing some barking dogs in the neighborhood.

Meals were tasty and the staff was always cheerful and helpful - we generally ordered in advance so the kitchen could be prepared.  They also kindly accommodated our early departures for birding outings, and were ready to arrange for rides or a taxi if/when needed.

Travel in PNG has its challenges (and rewards!), so we were very grateful to Raintree Lodge and their great staff, when they were able to provide us with an unexpected airport pickup, lunch and subsequent additional overnight stay, after our flight to Mt. Hagan was turned back to Port Moresby due to civil unrest at the Mr. Hagan airport. A surprise stay by a group of 12 could have been a big challenge, but they handled it with grace - and even a birthday cake for one of our trip leaders.

Raintree Lodge is lovely, and a particularly nice place to stay when making the transition to the adventure of PNG.

Just what we needed

The place is very professionally run.  The rooms are well presented, clean, comfortable and of a good size.  The customer service is excellent.  They are very adaptable and flexible in meeting the needs of the guests.  The common areas are well presented and maintained.  The place has good security and is a very pleasant place to stay.
