We truly enjoyed our stay at the hotel, which is delightfully old and creaky, with much atmosphere, friendly and helpful staff, and a beautiful location right on the fjord.  Our room was a bit of a surprise -- we reserved "one small room double mountain view, twin beds" -- it was indeed tiny!  We couldn't sit up in bed without bumping our heads in the sloped ceiling. The "mountain view" was a tiny window in an alcove, and the bathroom was a combined shower/toilet area.  I'm not complaining; we did want the least expensive room and I think we got it! The other rooms have different "personalities" and look funky and comfortable (which ours was) -- and larger.  Buffet breakfast each morning in the airy dining room was excellent, as was the set course, expensive dinner we had one night. We had beers on the deck overlooking the fjord each night, which was great. The hotel is at the end of the very sweet town -- not much there but books, and the view and hiking options, which is why we stayed there.  Would definitely recommend staying there! Be advised that the interior steps are narrow and steep, and the town closes down at the end of tourist season, so finding food outside of the hotel is a bit of a challenge.

Lovely stay at Fjaerland Fjordstove Hotel

This place is utterly unique. All the rooms are decorated with antiques, and I'm sure each one has its own story. Dinner was both delicious and beautiful, served with a view of a dazzling fjord. And the living room (you really can't call it a "lobby") was magical. Before dinner, the guests gathered there and our host told us about our upcoming meal and the hotel's history; after dinner many of us guests came back, sat at the sofas, and got to know each other over hours of good talk. I'm not sure if friendships are born every evening at this hotel, but I know this special little hotel does all they can to make it possible.

Magical

Stunning hotel in a truly beautiful location.We stayed in the loft room for four which was great for us,spent the day at the Glacier museum and on the fjord with canoes and SUPs.The dinner here is a very special experience with the whole team so proud of their locally sourced menu which is amazing.......do not miss this special  part of the world!

A must stay in Fjaerland!!

This is more than just a hotel–it's an absolutely magical escape from the daily grind. Hotel Manager Inna has created something truly special with her attention to detail and commitment to sustainability. 
The highlight of the experience is the wonderful breakfast that–if done right–spills into an afternoon of just lounging in the unbelievably cosy and character-filled living room, enjoying a book, a glass of wine, or the company of a similarly awestruck guest. Even though my group and I enjoyed two fantastic excursions away from the hotel, we wish we would have budgeted more time to do just this, and enjoy the spectacular view of the fjord right outside the window. 
Dinner is a very special treat here and should not be overlooked. Do it at least once and arrive early, by 7pm to enjoy a pre-dinner drink and hear about the property and the food you're about to eat. It will be delicious. It's certainly a splurge, and perhaps not financially sustainable for guests staying more than a couple nights, but it is part of the overall experience. I would have preferred larger portions, though it seemed to be a theme that most of our dinners across Norway were quite small. I didn't complain, but I'm sure Inna would have accommodated with a second helping had I asked. 
There's also quite a variance in rooms. They're all charming and adorable, but some are quite cramped with beds some might find too be quite uncomfortable. If you can, try and splurge for one of the suites with proper queen/double beds. But in all honesty, if you're looking to save some money and are an easy sleeper, no need to spring for a big one. You're going to want to spend most of your time in the communal areas downstairs anyway. Fortunately, the website makes it quite clear at the time of booking what room you're reserving. 
I truly hope to return to this magical place again. 

Utterly magical fjord hotel

This hotel is pretty special and was one of the highlights on our trip to Norway.  It sits right on the edge of the fjord and the water was glassy, green and reflecting all  the mountains and trees creating this really magical landscape.  The hotel has really nice Danish modern furnishings and is very well appointed.  Yes, the rooms are small but they are really quirky in their layout and I mean that in a good way.  We had a room with an amazing view of the glacier and two nooks carved into the walls for sleeping areas.  Our son loved having his own mini-room in the room!  Our room also had very nice furnishings that made the most of the space.  We did have the dinner there and it did not disappoint.  Our small table looked out over the water and the food was delicious. They have a common living room that was nice to hang out in - we played backgammon, looked at their books and just relaxed.  Hopefully we will be back!

Pretty special place

There is no question that the view from the hotel is amazing. It felt like a step back in time (in a good way) as we entered. We loved the ability to purchase beverages and cookies at the front desk. The negatives: The stairway to the third floor is narrow and steep, tough for luggage. Just walking down the hall makes significant noise, meaning that our early morning departure likely woke everyone up. I love that they reuse materials for environmental reasons, but those beds sure were creaky. Room decor is sparse and also appears repurposed. The evening manager chat before dinner is interesting, but on a bad weather day it forces you into your room each night at that time if you’ve already heard it, right at happy hour time. While the dinner was good, there was only one menu each night, no choices. There are dinner tables in the lounge, so there are few seating areas to hang out at if you don’t do the dinner. At one point we had cigarette smoke tracking up to our room through the window, due to employees smoking right outside the front door. Ultimately, we loved the charm, but we spent a lot of money and are not convinced it was worth it. We appreciate the history and age of this hotel, which gives it character. But more is needed to upgrade the overall guest experience.

I wanted to love it

Run-down, dirty, and sad. They offer everyone earplugs in the rooms to counter the noise. Fortunately the guests were not loud folks so sound was not an issue. The shower door did not reach the floor so we had to use towels to plug the bottom to avoid flooding. We did not want to spend 70 euro pp on a dinner based on what we saw of the place. They pride it on being a house from the 1930s so to deal with it - ok to have old charm but it sounded more like an excuse to avoid the cost of renovating. Breakfast is simple but good, a plus being self-made waffles. We have no desire to come back here. The best part is the view and there is a telescope pointed at the glacier which is cool.

Run-down and sad but staff friendly

Our family of 7 had a spectacular two night stay here.  It is historic and charming but its strongest advantages are the staff (especially Inna, the food and, of course, the spectacular location.  The deck and living room, right on the fjord, were an incredible experience.  Fjaerland Guiding, just two docks down on the fjord, provided kayaks to explore and a spectacular floating sauna experience that we all loved.  Local hiking and a visit to the glaciers were also favorites.  The food was fantastic - it was perfect to be able to spend the entire day relaxing at the hotel without having to go anywhere to enjoy everything the area has to offer.  Highly reccomend!

Magical stay!

We had a very nice stay at this small hotel. Beautiful location to the lake, with nice weather. Very quiet and peaceful area. Authentic hotel in an old Norwegian building. Diner was very good, with a set menu. We would love to come back here.

Very nice small hotel at a unique place

The hotel is in a beautiful situation in a tiny village and the surroundings were an absolute joy. The hotel is old-fashioned, quirky and creaky. Our room was not ready at 3.30. It was small and not very well appointed - no TV or tissues.. Lovely dinner but at an eye-watering cost. Worth staying a night for the setting alone.
