We were on an Aida cruise in Alta and had booked a trip to the Holmen Huskie Lodge. We were very kindly received and were really well taken care of on the spot. In small groups we had the opportunity to hug and hug the dogs extensively. The dog sled ride was relatively long and really went through the grounds. It was a bit of a thrill, but really beautiful. We were shown a really great movie by the owner of the lodge, who had taken part in the longest and toughest sled races in Europe a year earlier. After that we drank coffee at the dog fire and learned a lot about the dogs and the lodge. A round trip that was a success, we will definitely repeat it when we come back to Alta.

A beautiful morning

We have been to Alaska in the summer and spent time with Alaskan Husk8es, so to get the chsnce to sledge with them in Noreay was a must. This was the best excusrion we have ever had. The inspirational story of the Lodges owner is fantastic and quite emotional. To walk, interact and ride with these amazing, lovimg and hard working animals was breathtaking. We had a sled ride for about 5km (thier training run), then cuddles... a sit in a traditional tee pee with roaring fire, and tea, then a 15minute film about the owner and his story.. we will be back.. absolutley first class.

A lifetime dream

Wonderful experience staying in a (unexpectedly) warm lavvo surrounded by a 100 friendly huskies. We had a good night’s sleep and everything was great. We also did a husky sled that was really nice. The staff here is very nice and you can tell they love what they do.

It’s impossible to communicate in a review just how much fun this place is.  We went only for dogsledding but you can also stay there in cabins.  First we watched a film about the owner and his family who are champion competitive mushers. Then we got on our sleds for the sweetest and at the same time most insane ride through the woods. It was SO MUCH FUN.
After that a snack and hot drink in front in a warm fire in a lavvu. Then we got to go and meet and play with the dogs. 
The whole experience was wonderful. Everyone who worker ther was great, especially our musher, Peter, from Denmark. If you have the opportunity, don’t miss this

Don’t Miss This Experience

Highly recommended! Exceeded all expectations. This remarkable team manages accommodation, meals, activities and extra facilities (sauna etc) all while caring for over 100 beautiful, friendly dogs. When you stay there, you feel like a part of the team/family/pack. 

Dogsledding was extremely fun, and in the middle of winter the landscape was stunning. Big thank you to Tess for making us feel safe and confident on the sled and also for being excellent and inspiring company while sipping tea in the lavvu afterwards. 

We stayed one night in the dome, which was a really unique experience: very comfortable and with a clear view of the sky (we were lucky to catch the northern lights!) We also enjoyed the sauna/jacuzzi in the evening and had a relaxing time in and around the lodge. 

Another big thank you to Andrei for making everything run smoothly, preparing delicious meals and having excellent fireside chats.

Final note: for this trip we booked one of their packages, which included activities/accommodation in other venues, which I have reviewed separately (e.g. Sorrisniva Ice Hotel). However I must compliment the Holmen team for arranging/confirming schedules, transport and connections for the entire package. Everything worked perfectly, always on time, and always with a smile.

Unforgettable!

I’m  an experienced traveller and not into doing all the cliched tourist activities, but it was an amazing experience spending the morning with Holmen Husky. I highly recommend anyone staying in Alta to pay them a visit. The host were great and the dog sledding experience was awesome

Awesome Experience

An exceptional place. Booked many of our activities while in northern Norway through Holmen and had expectations exceeded at nearly every turn.

During our one day/night at the lodge we had an excellent time enjoying the sledding experience and meeting the dogs., throughout which we felt extremely welcome and well taken care of.

The lodge itself is a terrific small complex, of different styled huts and rooms, all centred around the dogs - who'll serenade you at various parts of the day and into the night (and are very keen for cuddles at every opportunity).

We booked the beautiful 'dome' hut, and had everything you could need to be comfortable and cosy (including - gasp! - views of the Northern lights overhead during our stay).

The team do an outstanding job of creating a relaxed, welcoming, atmosphere and environment. We benefiting from an especially quiet period during our stay, and were genuinely grateful to be able to get to know the team a little.

Andre (all round host-with-the-most and potato cook extraordinaire), Phil (master of the ice bath, and sauna proceedings) Nico (keeper of the homemade cookies) really all went out of their way to make us feel right at home.

A very special mention to Tess, who again went out of her way to include us in living her own dog-sled-led-best-life. Helping us take to the reigns of our first time dog-sledding, making sure we stayed warm, got snaps and were able to take in the best of our surroundings as we went ("Moose on the right!"). The memory of our short fire side chats and story swapping afterward, will doubtless keep me warm for a long time to come.

If looking for genuine international, friendly hospitality and some of the most beautiful spots Norway has to offer - I doubt anyone could do much better than the team at Holmen.

Exceptional stay!

Great experience! The team's welcome is warm, we feel good as soon as we arrive. The common living space is both spacious, cozy and comfortable. Before we leave with the dogs, we are given a complete set of equipment (overcombination, socks, boots, headlight) and very clear explanations. 2 people per sled, each 16 years old, the evening walk was just magical in a beautiful landscape! The place where we spent the night was super comfortable, well heated with an electronic pellets stove and a heating mattress, we absolutely did not have a super view from the bay window.

Magic of the Arctic

What a fantastic experience. We did an overnight in one of the Sami tents, with a husky sledge whilst on a cruise. Everything was amazing. The dog sledge lasted 40 minutes, and our guide was very talkative, asking, and answering many questions. Then coffee in the big teepee. and a long chat with the guide. then a lot of time meeting the lovely huskys. Very interesting. We were shown to our Sami tent, and things explained, my it was hot inside with the fire.  Evening meal in the lodge was lovely, reindeer stew with mash and veg. we all sat around for a while chatting. Walking to the toilet in -14c in the night, past the huskys was interesting. Then a lovely breakfast in the morning.. Fantastic, well worth the cost. 

what an amazing experience. 

This was an  unforgettable and outright amazing experience!! Hearty food and warm friendly staff keep the cold at bay. Still, we will not be as happy as the well looked after dogs at Holmen 🐕!! Worth every cent! Do yourself a favour, and tick this off your bucket list!
