Lau's Gateway

It has been 4 weeks since we left the stunning island of Niue and the beautiful Lau's Getaway, and it taken this long to be able to sum up in words just what an amazing experience we had staying there. From Avi meeting us at the airport with our car, we knew that this was going to be a memorable stay. A short 15 minute drive from the airport, and you are at Lau's Getaway, tucked away from the road, high on the clifftop, a hidden gem. Walking down to the apartment through lush gardens and succulent papaya hanging from the trees, we saw glimpses of the amazing views. It was almost as if Avi had trained the local whales, dolphins and blue parrot fish to be in place when he opened up the bedroom balcony doors. 2 humpback whales playing just 100 mtrs off shore, a pod of around 20+ spinner dolphins even closer and right below the cliff in the coral shallows were iridescent blue parrot fish and sea crates, happily playing in the lapping surf. The unit was very spacious, had everything that you needed for your stay including a welcome pack of wine, fruit juice, eggs, bread, milk etc. Enough to keep you going until you found your bearings and what you needed. The large bedroom had stunning views across the pacific and almost 180 degree visibility up and down the coastline due to its positioning on the cliff top. Every couple of days Lau changed the towels and bed linen and her tie dye sheets are so unique, and refreshing. The upper balcony had a huge double sized outdoor bath and a double daybed, great to watch the ocean from. Bathroom was enormous (the shower could probably fit 6 people easily), but the design and fit out exceeded our needs. Toiletries, towels, dressing gowns, hair dryer, iron, ironing board were all there and topped up every couple of days. Lau also offers a quick laundry service on a Wednesday to spruce up your larger items of clothing. Downstairs was a large lounge / dining area with lazy boy chairs, and a simple but well appointed kitchen. 2 TV's and dvd players are there, but didn't need to use them, as sitting outside in evenings listening to whale song and the gentle lapping of waves was therapy in itself. Whatever you needed was there, and if not, Avi and Lau were usually around (either at home, or at their Kai Ika restaurant - amazing food, a must place to eat at). Couple of useful hints for travellers staying at Lau's.... insect repellant if sitting outside in the evening (needed everywhere in Niue in the evenings), no need to pack too many clothes thanks to Lau's laundry service, and make the most of the outdoor bath and daybed. Avi, Lau and their daughters are awesome hosts. We are already planning our return.....say no more.
