Matagalpa

The room was fairly large and clean and the shower had hot water, the WiFi also worked well in the room.  The hostel is in a good location in town and the owners have helpful guides on what to do in the area.  
If you pay for your stay with a card then there is a 6% fee which isn’t listed anywhere online. 

Good spot

This is the place to stay! Stijn and Tamara are beyond accommodating and they truly care for their guests, giving them a top notch experience! They can help you out with any questions and know all the ins and outs of Matagalpa. Wilmar, Jilma and Gloria are absolute gems as well and really make the place extra special! The hostel offers super tasty, local, free coffee, a big book exchange and a great patio and balcony. They have lots of plants and birds that make the patio a wonderful place to relax. Definitely one of the cleanest hostels I've stayed at. It's also a really easy hostel to meet other cool travellers. Thanks a million for making my time in Matagalpa a special one!

Best hostel in Matagalpa!

Thank you much, Stijn, for a lovely home from home, and sorry it's taken me so long to get round to reviewing. Much love to Tamara & Madeleine (who was 2 when I was there, now nearer 3 in a few months!) and not forgetting Canalita (the only conejo who actually liked me) & your resident songster clay-coloured thrush in the courtyard.
Sorry, review-readers, for this preamble, but I think it shows the love you will also feel when alighting at Buena Onda - more natural than those Ticos with their Pura Vida.
Stijn is a mine of honest hearty practical info on the town and attractions further afield, and the hostel is clean and comfy and - homely, basically.
The Italian restaurant round the block, La Vita e Bella, I found a bit ho-hum, but I don't want to be too critical. Many many places couldn't keep their heads above water with the troubles of 2018. Matagalpa and the northern highlands were hit hard as tourists voted with timid tiptoes, forcefed scare stories by so-called developed world news. While Granada tours & San Juan Sur surfers rolled on oblivious. And Costa Rica got more yankee dollars. Es la verdad.
This lightly pencilled gap on the map is one of my favourite areas of the American Isthmus. 
Say hello to Noel & Co. at friendly Artesano's Bar, Carlito at Leco's.
Day trip to Selva Negra for great hikes & birding, with an hour or two at Jinotega if time allows. Penyas Blancas is another bussable option with more dramatic scenery and an overnight option at Don Chico's.

Huis van Huis

I stayed in the 8-beds dorm during 3 nights, everything was perfect. The ensuite bathroom is huge, the dorm very spacious. Big terrace overlooking the street. Very big house, lots of space. Close to the cathedral, the Palí and rest. La vita è bella (a must). Highly recommended.

Just perfect !

We stayed a couple of nights in Matagalpa and La Buena Onda made it unforgettable. The young family who runs the hostel gave us many information and ideas on activities arround and how to get there. Thanks to them we had a lot of fun and stayed a bit longer. The rooms are large and clean, the breakfast gallo pinto is delicious. The hot shower was a welcoming surprise in this lovely mountainous climate.

Perfect stay in a beautiful town

This is the perfect hostel. We loved the breakfast and the “vibe”! So many books available for lending, great advice from the knowledgeable staff about every conceivable question! Laundry service was so fast.

Great value, friendly, clean, central

My wife and I stayed in a private room.  Everything was clean, bed was comfortable and the shower was hot. Breakfast was excellent as well.  The best thing though was the coziness of the hostel and the warmth of the staff.  We are returning customers and will return again!!!

Amazing.  Feels like home

I loved my stay at La Buena Onda. The hostel is big and there’s lots of space spread out. Use of the kitchen is handy and it’s big as well. The family that runs the place is super kind and helpful and I really enjoyed all the chats I had with them. They helped me with the buses and times to/from the city and also to Selva Negra (which I highly recommend) and the waterfalls. The hostel is central to town, close to many supermarkets and street food and the Cathedral, a great base to explore mountainous Matagalpa and get a taste of the local culture. It’s about a 15-20 min walk from the southern bus terminal. The best part about this hostel is the awesome balcony on the second floor right outside the dorm room. The dorm room bathroom is also huge, and the shower sometimes has hot water. There is also a huge amazing selection of books to read and movies to watch as well.

I would definitely come back again - one of my favorite hostels in Nicaragua!

Lovely helpful staff, nice hostel, spacious

This is a great hostel to base yourself when exploring the highlands of northern Nicaragua. We were here when the protests started and the staff were lovely and always happy to help with our enquirers. The included breakfast is great too. The only down side was that it didn’t look like the bathroom was cleaned every day. Staff were really quick to act though when I let them know it had become a bit of a mess. Great, fast wifi and the rooms were very clean 

Nice hostel, lovely staff

This is quite a nice place. However, less than an hour after I checked into the hostel, I was relaxing in the common area and overheard the girl who checked me in (short, wears glasses) talking rudely about me with another staff member. I suppose they assumed that me being just another white person that I wouldn't understand Nica Spanish and they were safe to talk about me, despite me sitting less than 5 metres away. 

This was incredibly embarrassing and put a shadow on my stay in an otherwise lovely city.
