Really good hostel. The pod beds were brilliant - plenty of space for your stuff and black out blinds on the pods for a bit of privacy! Bedding was comfy and soft too. The kitchen area had a really useful blackboard with suggestions for things to do/places to go in the area. Nice courtyard space to relax. Clean bathroom area and spacious showers. 

Only thing to be aware of if you're in a dorm is there seemed to be a culture of leaving the dorm doors open/unlocked at any hour of the day. So just make sure your valuables are safely stowed in the lockers.

Great hostel!

Backpacking my way down to the south island and I stopped in this place. I came early so I didn't have to check in, however the guy said I leave my bags and go for a walks to huka falls. This was a beautiful walk and took about 2 hours. I love it, which gave them enough time to make my bed. Once I checked it, the staff were so lovely and everyone around, it was such lovely chilled back atmosphere. The beds were not on frames to just mattresses which was super comfortable.  And they gave you two pillow!! This was incredible. I love it every minute. Will be recommending to all my fellow friends and family. Thank you so much. Even though you had to check out by 10 also you could hang around areas that were not you your room so gave me time to charge my phone.

Best backpackers I've been to in new Zealand

We stayed at Finlay Jack's for 4 nights with our 2 boys who are 6 and 9.  We loved our room which had an ensuite bathroom.  The shared kitchen facilities were always clean a d the gas stoves worked really well. Our boys LOVED Biggy and how cute he was.  We hopefully will be back sometime soon.

Monday stop in Taupo, only me for the night so staff put me in a 4 berth mixed room, no others with me so excellent and comfortable bunks & bedding, no noisy springy cheap bunks, a great nights sleep.

We stopped at Taupo for a night and stayed here with our 2 boys, 5 and 8.  They want to say "We LOVE Biggy." (the gorgeous dog) Very clean room.  Everything we needed.  Very helpful at reception. Hope to go back one day.

1. Don’t bother with a POD, if you do then 
2. Don’t get a top bunk - you’ll hit your head and find climbing out a pain in the .....

Wonderful helpful friendly staff with great facilities. Hug room to relax and watch tv. Loved the pods. Nice and private. Only the shower room was bad as it’s very slippery and I did my knee in. Oh. It’s also clean

Stayed at Finlay Jacks for a few days to explore Taupo and had a wonderful time. The beds are comfortable, the rooms are clean and the staff is extremely accommodating. The reception was quick to book us any activities available and the hardworking staff made the place super clean each morning. If your looking for a fun place to meet people and be comfortable this is the place! Can’t wait to stay again when we re-visit New Zealand :)

Great Hostel

Had a wicked stay for a couple nights, somewhere to crash while I’m moving about. The vibe was cheerful around the place and even the staff seemed happy. Spoke to one lad behind the desk, Andy, funny as fudge ;) would recommend.

Excellent stay for a couple nights

I’ve had friends stay here in the past and when I knew I would be coming to Taupo, Finlay Jacks was the hostel I wanted to book. The staff first of all, were always so friendly and helpful when I spoke to them. Showed me to my room upon check in and pointed out where all the amenities were. I booked a 5 share female room to have a break from doing bunk beds and it was so nice and comfy in the room with plenty of space for 5 people. 

The kitchen area is great for the size of the hostel. Obviously at times it can get a little busy but that’s like at any communal kitchen in a hostel. It’s well equipped with pots and pans and trays to cook with and utensils. 

The showers always had great pressure and temperature and were always clean. Same with the toilets I found them to always be clean too. 

I love the layout of the hostel with the courtyard in the middle and most of the rooms off of it. Sat out there a couple of times and chilled with some of my roomies. 

I found my room had enough power points to charge devices and there was a power board in the room too to extend then amount available. We had a fan in the room but didn’t use it, as if we left the sliding door open to the courtyard, it cooled down quite well. 

There’s two supermarkets near by, only a minute or two walk. And there’s the warehouse across the street for any clothing or other bits and pieces like towels or a new backpack etc. and the hostel is a very short walk from the main shopping area where there’s some lovely looking places to go eat. 

The only thing I could mention to maybe improve on (and it’s not even that big of an issue coz you can easily work around it) is there was no hooks in the room to hang say a jacket from in winter or a towel after you’ve showered. As I said it’s not even that big an issue and I don’t know if that’s in all rooms or some or just ours. But some hooks on the walls might be handy!

Also. There’s Biggie. He’s the hostel dog and he’s awesome and loves all the attention he gets from travellers. He’s a big boi and the biggest softie. 11/10 good doggo. 

I know when I can get myself back to Taupo, I’ll be booking into Finlay Jacks again as it’s clean comfortable and affordable, in a good location and just overall amazing.
