We stayed twice during a 3 week trip to the South Island. Patrick's home is quiet, close to the airport, and close to good food options, including vegetarian ones. If you don't have a car, bus service is good. En-suite bathroom was a plus. Bed was very comfortable. Excellent value!

Wanted to stay close to the airport for our final night in Nz. It is reasonably close to the airport and I can state with confidence that it is a 37 minute brisk walk to the airport (I was pushing an airport trolley with two large suitcases). The walk to the airport is dead flat & the footpath is very good. Be aware that this isn't a motel, it is a suburban home in the suburbs. We never met the owner as we left at 3.30am but, as other reviewers have stated, the house is clean, bed was comfortable, it was very quiet and the WiFi was the fastest we had in Nz. If you want to go into the city or the airport, just catch a number 29 bus. It was $4 for a single ticket on the bus but you can do multiple trips as the ticket is valid for 2 hours. The reviewer who complained about the access to the house being difficult was exaggerating a bit. From the street to the front door was about a 15m walk on a well formed path. Next time try using the torch in your phone if its a bit dark! When I booked I didn't think I was booking a room in a suburban house but having stayed here now I would recommend it for a short stay that is 3km from the airport.

I arrived in a taxi from the airport at 12.30am. Had instructions with a key code to let myself in. I was in complete darkness,a dog barking and growling and so dark I could not find the front door down a tree ? lined path. I wasn't going to risk at 77years to feel my way down the darkness. I rang and rang no answer and at 2am!extremely upset rang the police .. they came at 2. 30am with big torch . Seems the accommodation is empty except for visitors .I was on my own after 4am when the other guest left . I left without sleeping in the bed  I found the emptiness creepy . Pity really because the house was immaculate and the bedrooms clean just such a pity they have not got a auto light on the front gate for late visitors. It would  have avoided a lot of upset  . I was not charged by Patrick.

Horrendous nightmare

The stay was below par but that wasn't the main issue here. I left a pair of expensive headphones at the accomodation. I contacted the owner and made all arrangements to have my headphones returned to me by courier. However, he was extremely difficult and claimed he couldn't print off the shipping receipt and subsequently never returned them! 

As such I lost a pair of headphones and the charges for a courier all because the owner was unable to use a printer.

Avoid at all costs

I booked one of their queen size room, the owner took my money and sent a text to confirm the booking. The following day the owner decided he's gonna let his family member stay in that room instead and offered me another smaller room. When I complained that this is a breach of good faith as I have already made the booking, he accused me of being too "mean". Absolutely pathetic.
