The mattress are to kill for very clean and tidy and Vinny's all ways available for a chat he's reception not to noisy and I like there drug and alcohol free policy's every thing you need in the kitchen is supplyed and is spotless clean thankyou 

I had originally booked Crash Palace next door, but unbeknownst to me it had closed for renovations prior to my stay, and no one had told me! Fortunately I was able to walk into Planet Backpackers without booking, and they had a bed I could stay in for my 2 nights planned in Rotorua. The staff were friendly & helpful, and the room as very clean, bed very comfy, and kitchen area well equipped. Would stay there again for sure

If you’re looking for affordable accommodation in a place run by people with the biggest hearts in Rotorua, look no further. I lived at Planet Backpackers for about 5 months, and they were some of the greatest months of my life. Every time you walk in, you’re instantly welcomed with a smile from Luke, Marie, and Lucas. Facilities are great, with loads of food storage, 2 very inviting lounge areas, and comfy beds. This hostel is like one big family. Whether you stay for a few nights or a few weeks, this place will still make you feel at home. I can’t thank the staff enough for being so kind to me during my time there, and for all the long term folks who never failed at showing me how to have fun while in Rotorua. Thanks for all the laughs and good times whānau. 

I lived here for about 3 months and everything about this place is absolutely amazing. It really feels like one huge family. At the front of the family you have Marie and Luke running the show and both of them truly go out of their way to make you feel at home. It felt like leaving home for the first time again when we had to leave. I’m aware there was a review that says free snippets and I just wanted to say that was untrue, don’t take my snippets Devki. You should try and stay in room 7, best room in the house.

Came to rotorua on a one day business trip and ended up staying 6 months because of this place. Everything about this place is spectacular. Free WiFi and snippets for all. So sad to leave Luke, Marie and all the amazing friends I’ve made at planet backpackers. This place is the definition of a home away from home

Luke and Maria are absolutly amazing. The amount of care that goes into both the hostel and guest is incredible, you would not find this atmosphere anywhere else. 
Both individuals strive to make the hostel truly feel like a home away from home and the amount of hard work put into this defiantly shows. 
This is by far the most amazing hostel I have ever stayed in. Clean kitchen, clean bathrooms, great common area, spacious rooms, great guests, friendly staff... Would 100% reccomend.

Traveling solo through New Zealand, I visited Rotorua for one night during a holiday weekend and fortunately managed to secure a room at Planet Backpackers without any prior reservation. Even though I stayed at the hostel for a truly short time, it made a great impression on me, thanks to its owner/manager Luke (a fantastic guy), welcoming and laid-back atmosphere, and very reasonable cost. Luke helped me make the most of my time in Rotorua, and I'd definitely recommend others stay at Planet.

I was well looked after 

Perhaps a slightly higher price for accommodation that in places needs attention.

Showers were a decent temperature, but were not clean at all. Toilets were clean, but the cubicle walls were grotty.

I could easily feel the metal mesh in the bunk bed mattress, so not terribly comfortable.

There was also a fitness studio nearby where I could hear the instructor over their loudspeaker from 5am.

Ok for one night maybe, but I wouldn’t want to stay longer.

Vinny on reception was pleasant when I arrived.

Ok, but needs some TLC

The place is in dire straits. There seemed to be a bunch of people living there long term. Dinner time seemed like a feast going on for a whole batallion. It was noisy,the kitchen was messy and the rooms smelled damp. The owners seemed really nice and friendly though. I don't think they should let groups stay in for a lengthy term.

Needs improvement

We stayed here for a few days based on the great reviews it had under previous owners. But it was clear from the second we stepped through the door that it is a very different place now. 

It has become a permanent resistance for people to stay while they work in the town. It feels as though these people are being exploited by the owners... we overheard a conversation with the owner telling a resident they had to pay for 6 months rent or nothing.... he only had the money for 3 months. 

In all honesty its dirty, it smells unclean / damp with a terrible vibe. The residents clearly don’t appreciate travellers coming in and out and it’s pretty uncomfortable using it walking through the common areas. 

Find somewhere else to stay!!
